From Publishers Weekly
Grave robbing and witches provide the atmospheric overture as Maj. Abel Jones, agent for Abraham Lincoln, investigates the murder of a Northern general in his fifth suspenseful adventure. In the preceding novel, Honor's Kingdom, the diminutive Welshman was in England working for the Union's interests, but here he returns home to "dear Pottsville" in Pennsylvania. Jones must journey deeper into coal country when Gen. Carl Stone, who had been recruiting Irish miners for the Union army, is found slain. The confessed killer has died of cholera, but a cautionary check of his grave finds interred instead the body of a young woman who has been stabbed to death. The intrigue thus triggered brings Jones up against a mad priest, local witch women and the tight-knit society of the Irish mining community (among its members is Black Jack Kehoe, later notorious in the Molly Maguires). Complicating the investigation are clues pointing to Russia and schemes for world revolution from the prewar years when the general went by the name of Carl von Steinbrock. Inevitably the investigation returns to the Irish immigrants, "Those famine lads cut loose to find their keep, in a world that did not want them or their kind." With this latest novel, the pseudonymous Parry-otherwise known as Ralph Peters, the author of thrillers (The Devil's Garden) and policy-wonk nonfiction (Beyond Terror: Strategy in a Changing World)-ably advances his series of historical fiction. The usual amusing observations of his tight-laced hero and a rousing finale set during the grim battle of Fredericksburg are sure to please his devoted following.

From Booklist
Parry continues his excellent Civil War mystery series featuring Union Army detective Abel Jones. When a Union general attempting to recruit Irish immigrant laborers is murdered, President Lincoln assigns Abel to the case. During the course of his inquiry, he uncovers the putrefied body of a young girl buried in another man's grave. Sensing these two homicides are linked, he sets out to establish a firm connection between them. Abel's investigation contains several surprising twists and turns, culminating in a chilling admission of guilt from a greedy capitalist determined to maximize his profits during the lucrative war years. Another evocative and boldly executed historical whodunit irresistibly steeped in Civil War atmosphere and arcana. Margaret Flanagan

Gets better with each book
By Mochyn
Owen Parry's books get better with each novel. The suspense is good, the mystery is well handled. His character of Jimmy Malloy is priceless and unlike one reviewer's comments, Mr. Parry (not Perry, that's an Irish name) is even handed and speaking from a 19th century perspective). I would only have several minor nits with it: The German used has occassional grammatical errors; there is no Welsh. A man of Abel Jones' background coming from Merthyr would have spoken Welsh. Why don't he and his wife speak in Welsh in front of the workers rather than go to another room? He also comments on the baroness being from "Estland" (Estonia) and then commenting about the German barons' treatment of the Slavs. The Estonians are Finns, not slavs.

You cannot read these books fast. There is a lot of excellent imbedded wisdom. I think every fundamentalist who reads his Bible with blinders on should read the section when Malloy talks about Darwin and the creation story.

In earlier works you get a very real sense of what Washington and London were like in these days. Here you get a very real sense of the coal mines and Fredericksburg (where I live and work as a volunteer at our Civil War parks) after the Union occupation.

Another Great Abel Jones Mystery
By Richard R
This is the fifth in Parry's wonderful Civil War detective series with protagonist Major Abel Jones, a prissy and dogged Welshman turned Union officer who runs special errands for the Lincoln White House. Jones' character has taken a turn for the worse, as "Bold Sons of Erin" revolves around the murder of a Union general, grave robbing, and the insular lower-class Irish immigrant community in Pennsylvania coal country. Parry has done his homework and the Civil War era comes to life as Jones plods his way to the solution. This reader identified the culprit less than one-third of the way through, but enjoyed the rest of the tale no less.
The plot lines here are less convoluted and opaque than in the previous installment, "Honor's Kingdom", making this novel smoother if less demanding on the reader. Major Jones, however, is becoming insufferable. In earlier novels, his idiosyncrasies were sort of quaint and amusing. By now, he's grown a bit unlikeable, making one hope that his beloved wife pounds some humanity and compassion into him before the next installment comes out.

You cannot go home again.
By R. BULL
Owen Parry continues his Able Jones series with another book that gives a real sense of time, place and people. This time the place is Able's beloved hometown in the Pensylvania coal fields which turns out to be stranger than anywhere his travels have taken him so far. Once again the author gives us thumbnail sketches of historical figures. This novel has strong gothic elements, which were, for me, the least interesting part of the book. In additon to solving murders which nobody wants solved and working from limited information Able has to deal with his wife and son, who are changing in ways he did not anticipate. He also has to defend his staunch Methodism against enticing secular influences. Able is one hero aware of his own limitations...at least partially. He does not take himself too seriously...in the end. The book ends with a description of the slaughter of federal troops at the battle of Fredericksburg, which is, by itself, reason enough to buy this book.

Scraps of Paper (The First Spookie Town Murder Mystery Book 1), by Kathryn Meyer Griffith

"Scraps of Paper is a well-constructed mystery with just the right mix of good guys and bad guys, with a sprinkling of oddballs and misfits thrown in. Kathryn Meyer Griffin does a nice job of allowing the friendship of the book's two main characters to develop as the story progresses. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good who-done-it, set in a picturesque environment with believable characters. This is the first book in a series the author calls 'The Spookie Town Mysteries'." 5 Stars Reviewed by Michael McManus for Readers' Favorite May 17, 2013 (Second in the series: ALL THINGS SLIP AWAY)

Snippet of NOVELSPOT Review for Scraps of Paper:
"The premise behind this story intrigued me. Old houses have their own history-bad and good. What would you do if, while you were renovating an old house, you found an intriguing mystery, even if it was years old? If you had a chance of solving that mystery, would you? Or would you leave it buried in the past? Would you want someone digging in your past, your tragedies? If someone you loved just disappeared, what would you do?
Kathryn Meyer Griffith's Scraps of Paper is an engaging story of what happens when you go digging into the past and the possible consequences. It also has an underlying story about dealing with what life hands you and finding the strength to move on. Both Frank and Abby are strong characters they have had to deal with the loss of a loved one and to learn to deal with that loss. You find yourself drawn to them and to all the quirky people who live in the little town of Spookie. In the end you want to know what happened in the old house so many years earlier. I'll be looking forward to more books about this quaint little town."

From the Author
The Story of Scraps of Paper, All Things Slip Away & Ghosts Beneath Us

I originally began writing this Spookie Town Murder Mystery series, set in a quirky little town I called Spookie (a tip of my hat to my horror roots) around 2002. I'd written the first book, Scraps of Paper and in 2006 the second I called All Things Slip Away for Avalon Books as hardcovers. But it took me another 9 years to write and put out the third, Ghosts Beneath Us. Life, as it always does, got in the way-and I was writing my award winning Dinosaur Lake series and overseeing the production of twenty audio books. By then I'd left the legacy publishers far behind and was self-publishing all my books. I still am.

Scraps of Paper is about an artist named Abigail Sutton, whose husband has been missing for two years, and who's just learned he's been dead all that time-a victim of a gone-wrong mugging. She begins a new life and moves to a small town full of fog, quirky townspeople and mysteries. And right away she's drawn into one of her own when she buys, renovates, a fixer-upper house and uncovers hidden in it scraps of paper written by two young children who once lived there with their mother, and who supposedly drove away thirty years before and were never seen again. The town thought they simply went somewhere else; began a new life. But Abigail suspects they never left the house; suspects they'd been murdered. She finds three graves in the back. Of course, with her history of a missing husband she develops the overpowering urge to find out what happened to them. The scraps of paper she continues to find makes the bond, the desire, stronger. She forms a friendship with an ex-homicide cop, Frank, and together they solve the mystery. Only thing is there's someone still living in the town that just as desperately doesn't want them to; someone who'd kill to keep the murderer's identity secret. The next two books are the continuation of Abigail and Frank's sleuthing adventures, their blossoming romance and about the eccentric, lovable people who live in Spookie.

All Things Slip Away zeroes in more on Frank, the ex-homicide detective, as a serial killer from his past threatens their peaceful town of Spookie and both their lives.

Ghosts Beneath Us about the old people in town supposedly being haunted and killed off by...ghosts.

All three are now in paperback and in audio books.

An excellent beginning to the series
By Sean Levin
Disclaimer: The author was kind enough to send me a copy of this excellent book to review. What follows is my honest opinion of same.

Speaking as someone who enjoys mystery novels, I very much enjoyed reading this novel and following the clues along with the protagonist, Abigail Sutton. As the novel continues, the stakes continue to grow higher for Abigail as she investigates the disappearance thirty years before of the previous tenants of the house she has moved into. Griffith does an excellent job of keeping up the suspense all throughout the novel, and I for one found it much more interesting than many of the detective shows on network television these days.

This novel was originally released in 2003 (though internal references place the story itself in 2000), and has only now been re-released by Griffith as an eBook. I am pleased to say that the novel has aged very well, and is totally absent of the jarring differences in language and story structure one sometimes finds in books that are at least a decade old. Indeed, Griffith’s choice of words is simple and direct without being one-dimensional, and she certainly does not skimp on describing characters and settings.

This novel is a most enjoyable read. It is suspenseful, richly detailed, timeless, and keeps you guessing until the very end. I look forward to reading more of Kathryn Meyer Griffith’s work in the future, particularly further entries in this series, including the already-published second novel, All Things Slip Away. This novel earns an enthusiastic five tentacles from this reviewer!

A fine murder mystery well worth reading.
By Aaron J Fletcher
I reviewed this work for MonsterLibrarian.com and am posting the review here per the author's request.

Abigail Sutton had been going through a tough time in her life. Her husband had unexpectedly been killed and she had lost her job as a graphic artist at a local newspaper. It was time to change her life. She ends up settling in an old home, a fixer-upper, in a small town named Spookie. The previous owner, Edna Summers, had been a recluse. An elderly woman who had passed away with no known heirs. Edna's younger sister who had two children had lived there in the distant past. They had left or disappeared thirty years before and had not been seen or heard from since. The stories of their departure vary and Abigail wonders about their fate while she redecorates her new home. She finds a scrap of paper written by one of the kids. It reveals a tale of fear and abuse of their mother by an unnamed man. Unable to let it go she asks some of the local folks around town what they remember about the family so many years before. She meets Frank, a retired Chicago police detective and they begin to dig into the mystery. More scraps of paper are discovered. More questions than answers surface. The local newspaper runs a serialized story on it and the whole town gets involved. Most people are eager to help. Someone is not. Threatening notes, vandalism, break-ins and theft escalate to a life threatening car chase before all is revealed.

This suspenseful tale of a small town disappearance was a lot of fun to read. The author does a great job of weaving small town life into the ongoing thread of the mystery. The characters are well developed and had their own voices throughout. I really enjoyed how the suspense built up during the course of the story. The plot kept you wondering to the end without getting convoluted to distraction. The only criticism I have was more a stylistic issue as it seemed like some of the word choices were peculiar to me in that they were not mainstream enough. The story still worked well though. I have not read any of Kathryn Meyer Griffith's work in the past. I would recommend this tale for adult readers.

okay.
By chloeishere
I finished it, but it's about the same as most free books I've gotten for kindle-- if I'd have paid for it, I would have been disgruntled.

Sentence structure and vocabulary was unsophisticated (felt like it was written by an sixth grader), and if this was supposed to be a mystery, it fell short of the mark (it was obvious who did it from at least halfway through, but I slogged on). If it was supposed to be a romance, it didn't really hit that note, either. Characters were... okay, but not interesting, engaging, or third dimensional. I have no interest in following any of them in another book.

I was able to finish it, but I couldn't say it was enjoyable or made me think. Despite this, it's definitely in the top 10% of the free (non-classic) books I've read on kindle. But I'd be lying if I gave it more than 2 stars.

The lesson I should take from this is I need to stop trying the freebies and stick to books that have been vetted, edited and approved through a traditional publisher. As a voracious reader with limited free time, books like this are a waste of my scarce and precious reading time.

It might be an enjoyable, light read for younger readers (or those with a smaller vocabulary or who are just learning English), but there's sexist stereotypes liberally sprinkled about, and lots of domestic abuse, so I wouldn't suggest it for young or impressionable readers.

Not as simple as it seems
By Monica Polinsky
When I first received this book I was struck by just how pretty it was. The illustrations, cover, page quality, colors are very similar to the You Can Heal Your Life companion workbook. Just looking at this book makes me smile but I suspect that is because the truth consciousness is very high and just having the book in my energy field is uplifting.

I know that sounds artsy fartsy, but if you read energy you soon find out that many books are big on promises and small on real wisdom. Once I started flipping through the book I was initially disappointed. I didn't find much of an introduction or explanation about how to best use the book. The text is divided into 95 topics ranging from Abundance and Acceptance to Working Together and World Community and each topic has a description, affirmation or other spiritual treatment. Scanning the pages, it looked like a regurgitation of her other books.

But then I started working with the book more deeply and what I found was a simplicity that is truly wise. By not offering the reader guidance in how to use the book, the reader is able to let their inner guidance lead them to the passages that will most benefit them. You can either start at the front and work one section at a time or skip around as you have a need.

The affirmations and treatment are simply worded and uplifting in tone. I disagree with an earlier review stating there are too many "shoulds" and "coulds". I did not find any shoulds and coulds but rather affirmations written in present tense describing that which we want in our lives as if it is already a reality. The text gradually helps us to change our perspective on issues and to understand first hand how much power we have to create our lives.

An example is the section on Beliefs on page 23: "I create wonderful new beliefs for myself. I am always safe. Everything I need to know is revealed to me. Everything I need comes to me in the perfect time/space sequence. Life is a joy and filled with love. I prosper wherever I turn. I am willing to change and to grow. All is well in my world".

Not every section is an affirmation like the one above. Many offer the author's "Heart Thoughts" and ask some very probing questions to help us uncover our true beliefs and what might be blocking us. I find that some of the most helpful information for me is written in the simplest way. Sometimes so simple that we almost miss the genius of the passage. But there's no need to worry about missing anything important, each reading takes us to a different level and we get exactly what we need at that moment each time.

If you are looking for a practical, easy to follow book in which you don't have to wade through pages and pages of the author's opinions and life experiences just to get to that handful of meaningful gems then this book is for you. You can literally read each section in less than 5 minutes and take away something meaningful each time. If you are already a fan of Louise Hay's work, you will also love this book. If you are new to Louise Hay and are looking for something more in depth I highly recommend starting with You Can Heal Your Life and the companion workbook.

Disclosure: I received a free copy of this book from Hay House Publishing for the express purpose of providing my unbiased and honest opinion.

A must read if you've read Book 1.
By Margo Otto
I bought this book because I had chosen Book 1 by the same title, fell in love with the story and the characters in the book and had to see how the story ended. It's a rich girl meets poor boy who works for her parents as a groundskeeper. They, of course, fall in love but daddy and mommy do not want her to ruin her life with someone who is not worthy of her, even if she is pregnant. The hero of the book, Caleb sets out to prove he is worthy of her. He goes to college to work on a business degree, working three jobs while taking courses at the junior college to prove he can take care of her. Their love is strong and continuous through it all, through her father's keeping them apart, through each of them not knowing where the other is. All they know is that they love each other and that someday they will be together.

The Best Horror of the Year (The Best Horror of the Year Series Book 5), by Dan Chaon, Lucy Taylor, Ramsey Campbell, Margo Lanagan, Laird

Darkness, both literal and psychological, holds its own unique fascination. Despite our fears, or perhaps because of them, readers have always been drawn to tales of death, terror, madness, and the supernatural, and no more so than today when a wildly imaginative new generation of dark dreamers is carrying on in the tradition of Poe and Lovecraft and King, crafting exquisitely disturbing literary nightmares that gaze without flinching into the abyss—and linger in the mind long after. Multiple award-winning editor Ellen Datlow knows the darkest corners of fiction and poetry better than most. Once again, she has braved the haunted landscape of modern horror to seek out the most chilling new works by both legendary masters of the genre and fresh young talents. Here are twisted hungers and obsessions, human and otherwise, along with an unsettling variety of spine-tingling fears and fantasies. The cutting edge of horror has never cut deeper than in this comprehensive showcase of the very best the field has to offer. Enter at your own risk.

Very Good Collection of Horror Stories
By Deborah
** spoiler alert ** 4.5 stars

Overall, this was a very good collection of horror stories, with a nice variety of both supernatural and psychological monsters. It's worth reading just for the stories by Laird Barron, with whom I was already familiar, and Gary McMahon, who is now on my "authors to watch" list. My rating and review of each story appear below.

Nikishi, by Lucy Taylor: 2.5 stars. An utterly predictable tale of a bad guy finding out that there are worse monsters in the world than he is.

Little America, by Dan Chaon: 4 stars. A post-apocalyptic tale, involving mutated children similar to werewolves. I liked the way Chaon brought his post-apocalyptic world down to the human level, where one old man is trying to save one child, while that one child is trying to hold onto his humanity.

A Natural History of Autumn, by Jeffrey Ford: 3.5 stars. Introduces a supernatural entity with which I was not familiar, the Japanese Jinmenkin. There is an interesting twist at the end regarding that entity's motivation for its action.

Mantis Wives, by Kij Johnson: 1 star. Seemed to be using yoga positions or martial arts kata as metaphors for male/female relationships, but ultimately, I just didn't get it.

Tender as Teeth, by Stephanie Crawford and Duane Swierczynski: 4 stars. An apparently sympathetic portrayal of a former zombie. I would have given this story 4.5 stars; however, the sympathy the authors seemed to intend that the reader feel for Justine was destroyed in the last few paragraphs, leaving me feeling betrayed.

The Callers, by Ramsey Campbell: 4.5 stars. A story of strange and indistinct rituals which manages to build dread through the unlikely device of bingo rhymes. I spent the entire story trying to interpret what those rhymes meant for Mark, and although the ending didn't resolve that question for me, the juxtaposition of the bingo game and the menace of the women's behavior was nevertheless satisfying.

Two Poems for Hill House, by Kevin McCann: 1 star. Simply didn't get them, although I have to admit that poetry has never been particularly attractive to me.

Mariners' Round, by Terry Dowling: 5 stars. I am always amazed by stories which recognize the hidden creepiness of carousels. I liked the way in which the theme of circles appeared throughout the story.

Nanny Grey, by Gemma Files: 3 stars. An average story of a bad guy getting his comeuppance from a girl who wasn't exactly what she seemed to be.

The Magician's Apprentice, by Tamsyn Muir: 3 stars. An average story in which human sacrifice is used to power magic.

Kill All Monsters, by Gary McMahon: 5 stars. An excellent exploration from the wife's point of view of her husband's response to monsters, real or imagined.

The House on Ashley Avenue, by Ian Rogers: 5 stars. A wonderful haunted house story involving a paranormal investigation group known as the Merefield Group. I would enjoy reading more stories involving the adventures of Merefield Group agents.

Dead Song, by Jay Wilburn: 4.5 stars. Intriguing exploration of the power of music in post-zombie America. I really liked the documentary-style discussion of the different music types which emerged after the apocalypse. I would have liked more fleshing out of the theme of Appalachia as a secretive, backward area with its own traditions.

Sleeping, I Was Beauty, by Sandi Leibowitz: 4.5 stars. A variation on the tale of Sleeping Beauty, with an erotic tone reminiscent of A.N. Roquelaure's Sleeping Beauty trilogy and a hint of the necrophilia in Neil Gaiman's "Snow, Glass, Apples." Although I generally don't like poetry, Leibowitz offers some beautiful images: "fresh bud of ankle/flowering through the rip"; "unsnarling the skein of words/one hundred years of sleep have knotted up."

Bajazzle, by Margo Lanagan: 2.5 stars. The most memorable line for me was Don's opinion of Kindle owners: "To Don's mind, there was no way to read off one of those things without looking smug. Ooh, look at me. I've got all of Jane Austen in here, and everything Charles Dickens wrote, no bigger than a couple of CDs. I just love it!" I was confused by the author's note on Sheela-na-gigs, which seemed to contradict their portrayal in the story.

The Pike, by Conrad Williams: 3 stars. An OK story, although I would not describe it as horror.

The Crying Child, by Bruce McAllister: 5 stars. A fine take on the remote village with an ancient secret to hide.

This Circus the World, by Amber Sparks: 2.5 stars. The repetition of the phrase "the way" gave a nice rhythm to the story, but there was little substance.

Some Pictures in an Album, by Gary McMahon: 5 stars. The simple, almost clinical description of each picture leads to a creeping sense of dread as the reader tries to understand the story behind the pictures.

Wild Acre, by Nathan Ballingrud: 3.5 stars. Although this story of a werewolf killing is nothing special, it is elevated by the description of the effects on the survivor's self-image and marriage.

Final Exam, by Megan Arkenberg: 5 stars. A very interesting approach, in which the author guides the reader into piecing together the story from the options offered in the answers to multiple-choice questions. I liked the answer key, which let the reader in on what really happened. I also liked the comparison of the end of a marriage with the end of the world.

None So Blind, by Stephen Bacon: 3 stars. If the author intended this story to be suspenseful, he failed, as it was apparent almost from the beginning what Alex had done. Still, I enjoyed seeing the horrific incident from the point of view of the (somewhat sympathetic) villain.

The Ballad of Boomtown, by Priya Sharma: 3 stars. A clichéd story of adultery leading to tragedy, in which the Three Sisters legend is poorly integrated.

Pig Thing, by Adam L.G. Nevill: 4 stars. A better-than-usual version of the "parents protecting their monster child" tale.

The Word-Made Flesh, by Richard Gavin: 4 stars. Similar in plot to Stephen King's Pet Sematary, but with more pathos.

Into the Penny Arcade, by Claire Massey: 4 stars. Another reminder that a girl should not get into a strange man's vehicle, but with the added twist of her lucky escape and the poetic justice meted out to the ultimate victims.

Magdala Amygdala, by Lucy A. Snyder: 5 stars. A wonderful synthesis of the vampire and werewolf mythoi, in which the reader gradually understands that both have resulted from a common virus and have a symbiotic relationship forced upon them by the persecution of the uninfected population.

Frontier Dead Song, by Laird Barron: 5 stars. A new approach to the legend of the Wild Hunt, and the best entry in this anthology.

I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads.

Awesome
By EF
My attention span has gotten so short, I honestly didn't think I was capable of reading a book anymore, as sad as that sounds. I spend so much time jumping from screens to screens of various sizes that it feels strange to sit still for a while and actually read something.

This book, with its collection of expertly crafted and compelling stories, eased me back into the practice of daily reading and reminded me why I fell in love with books and storytelling in the first place. What's more, it's a great group of stories for people who love unsettling tales. I discovered some awesome new-to-me authors that I'm tracking down for more of their works now. Overall, it's great entertainment!

A few great stories, a few duds, but overall an entertaining read
By SK Nash
I enjoy "best of" anthologies because they give me a chance to read things I may have missed along the way. I know that I will not like everything, as horror is often just a matter of taste. I was particularly pleased to see poetry in the anthology.

These were my favorites: Mantis Wives, by Kij Johnson. The anthropologist living in my head was particularly delighted.

The Callers by Ramsey Campbell had a new take on old traditions carried forward, seemed an homage to The Lottery and The Wicker Man.

Dead Song by Jay Wilburn, surprised me. I liked it in spite of my eye-rolling dismissal of most zombie fiction. I was caught up in the documentary of the music and the regions. The last few paragraphs made me turn the lights on.

My favorite poem was Sleeping, I Was Beauty by Sandi Leibowitz. Gorgeous words and images.

An apocraphyl American legend
By Stephen Balbach
The American legend of Pecos Bill was supposedly handed down by early settlers of the Southwest, however more recent research has shown this is probably apocryphal. The stories were largely invented as "fakelore" by Edward O'Reilly in 1923 for The Century Magazine, soon after collected in the book "Saga of Pecos Bill". Later writers then borrowed or expanded on O'Reilly's stories.

Although O'Reilly created the legend, probably the most well known and best written collection of Pecos Bill stories is by James Cloyd Bowman, who won the Newbery Honor for "Pecos Bill: The Greatest Cowboy of All Time" (1937). In the 1937 Preface, Bowman does not discuss his sources, except to say "This is a volume of genuine American folklore", and that he collected from "original documents left by the early adventurers into the open range country." This sounds suspicious today, and it is unfortunate the publishers of this 2007 re-print did not include an updated literary history Introduction that examines Bowman's sources in more detail. It now gives the appearance of a buried literary crime waiting to be uncovered.

Still, this is a beautifully written and re-produced book with original illustrations by Laura Bannon. It is exactly the children's book my parents would have read and fits perfectly with the 1940s and 50s image of the American cowboy hero, or something out of the movie A Christmas Story. I was first introduced to Bowman's work in a non-fiction biography of Robert Louis Stevenson and was impressed by his down to earth, easy to read and factual prose and thus sought out more. He's not that well know today, in particular for his literary criticism, but considering his generation (born 1880) his writing is unpretentious and modern yet gentle and easy to read.

As for Pecos Bill himself, readers of Kiplings The Jungle Books will recognize the story of the orphaned human baby raised by wolves, mastering the natural world around him, then returning to his human folk to do the same. Many of the stories describe the origins of various cowboy related things: the roundup, branding, roping, the rodeo, etc.. along the way you learn about cowboy life and culture.

One thing to note, although this is an illustrated children's book it is still a lot of text, about 20 chapters it took me about 4-5 hours to read, it is more in the young adult category, some of the vocabulary is fairly advanced and specialized.

Great book of American folklore
By Stuart Dunn
Pecos Bill: The Greatest Cowboy of All Time is a book that was published in 1937. It also received the title of Newberry Honor Book. 70 years later, New York Review Books brought this classic back into print, much to my delight. The book begins with an introduction by the author that explains that these book is folklore. That means that while there may be bits of truth in these stories, they are tall tales for the most part, which were a big part of American literature.

The book begins with young Bill being four years old. His family was migrating westward and travelling by a covered wagon. To his family's knowledge, he was asleep in the back of the wagon. He actually fell out of the wagon; was found by a coyote, who raised him; and taught him everything about the outdoors. Bill, therefore, grew up believing that he was a full-blooded coyote. In Chapter Two, Bill met a human nicknamed Chuck. The two conversed as best they could, and it was here that Bill re-learned the English language. He also finally learned that he was indeed a human and not a coyote. He wasn't happy to learn this, and it took a great deal of convincing, but the bit of evidence that finally won him over was when Chuck realized that Bill was his long-lost brother. Other chapters include Pecos Bill becoming a cowpuncher (a cowboy); Pecos Bill busting a cyclone; and Pecos Bill meeting his love, Slue-Foot Sue.

Reading tall tales about characters such as Paul Bunyan and Pecos Bill should be required reading for all children in the United States. This book is recommended for children ages 9 to 12, and it does have some illustrations in it. That being said, it still is a 250 page book, so if your children are on the younger end of that range, you might want to make it a read-aloud book, which isn't a big deal, because this is a book that the whole family will enjoy. I know mine did. I highly recommend this book for all the cowboys and cowgirls out there.

Remarkably mild and awfully slow
By Pop Bop
I was very surprised by this book. I expected a classic American collection of Pecos Bill Tall-Tales to have some real humor and life to it. Well, the stories are so extended and deadpan that they end up being lifeless and sort of forced. I mean, Pecos Bill is a bigger than life, hearty, funny, wild trickster and adventurer. This books reads like one of those "You-are-there" middle grade historical biographies.

So, if for some reason you want your little reader to know the official and classic Pecos Bill, this is certainly the authoritative source. But if you want an entertainment based on Pecos Bill, this probably isn't it.
