About the Author
Ellery Queen was a pen name created and shared by two cousins, Frederic Dannay (1905–1982) and Manfred B. Lee (1905–1971), as well as the name of their most famous detective. Born in Brooklyn, they spent forty-two years writing, editing, and anthologizing under the name, gaining a reputation as the foremost American authors of the Golden Age “fair play” mystery. Although eventually famous on television and radio, Queen’s first appearance came in 1928, when the cousins won a mystery-writing contest with the book that was later published as The Roman Hat Mystery. Their character was an amateur detective who uses his spare time to assist his police inspector uncle in solving baffling crimes. Besides writing the Queen novels, Dannay and Lee cofounded Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine, one of the most influential crime publications of all time. Although Dannay outlived his cousin by nine years, he retired Queen upon Lee’s death.

Cat of Many Tails - Among Ellery Queen's Best Stories

Cat of Many Tails is Ellery Queen at his best. Written in 1949, this suspenseful story, as much a thriller as a mystery, sits almost exactly midway in the Ellery Queen canon.
Cat of Many Tales illustrates the willingness of Frederic Dannay and Manfred B. Lee to take risks by deviating from their highly successful formula, that of the Ellery Queen deductive puzzler. In this story Dannay and Lee focus more on the victims as actual individuals, and not simply as pieces in a puzzle. Each victim is realistically described; these vignettes add a strong emotional dimension to the story.
The middle chapters examine New York City itself, not the geographical entity, but the living, breathing metropolis of seven and one-half million people. Dannay and Lee offer a fascinating sociological study of collective fear as thousands of individuals become terrorized by the actions of a single, unknown assailant. Contrastingly, the later chapters shift focus from mass psychology to the motivation and psychology of a single, disturbed individual.
Despite this somewhat atypical structure, Cat Of Many Tails is a solid example of Ellery Queen's remarkable deductive skills. Without giving too much away, Cat of Many Tails is an example of one of Ellery Queen's challenging solutions within a solution, a multi-layered conclusion.
Cat of Many Tails ranks among the best Ellery Queen mysteries, worthy of five stars.

SURPRISE!!! WORDS OF MORE THAN ONE SYLLABLE!!!

Thought I was buying an old fashioned "pulp", but I got a handily written tale parading a LOT of appropriate slang and not a sleazy 4 letter among them! This was a tale that must have been cutting edge for the time....and you see I like vintage mysteries where all the hype goes into the story instead of the tech. Literate + savvy = fun......I'll try another.....Maybe an earlier one this time....

Reminded me of the Son of Sam summer, even though this story took place about 40 years earlier!

I was thrilled to see that the Ellery Queen series being digitized for Kindle. My friend had never heard of Ellery Queen, so we started with this title. I read this out loud to her (she has difficulty reading with her failing eyes), when we finished the book, she wondered where she was that she never heard of Ellert Queen. We decided to get every Kindle edition that is available. As to this particular title - it's very suspenseful, as we got further into the book we got to the point where we couldn't stop reading and had to finish it. We were up until 2:30 am to finish it! My friend lived in New York City, so she was well acquainted with the locales mentioned in the book. We could feel the frustration that Ellery and his dad were feeling in trying to catch this very elusive serial killer. It also reminded me of when NYC was trying to catch the Son of Sam killer, even though this story takes place in the late 30s, early 40s.
