Motivational, inspirational and enjoyable.

This book is a very enjoyable read, but motivational for anyone of any age in any situation.

I found the author's approach very practical, yet motivating. His "Life Success Scale" will help anyone to rate their success in life at that point. Great stories of success are interspersed throughout.

Meaning and purpose are vital elements in evaluating our lives, and Dwight Bain relates many stories to help us discover and apply success secrets that will lead us forward every day. In addition, he shows us pitfalls or obstacles which might hinder our efforts to reach higher.

His book will help any man or woman to grow into the person they were designed to be. Great suggestions and ideas will serve as wonderful resources for the journey to success defined only by each individual. You will not only enjoy reading this book, but you will enjoy applying the practical information enclosed within its covers.

Take the first step toward a fuller life

I filled this book with highlights and Post-It notes, and covered half a dozen pages of a legal pad with notes as well. This book is a great first stop on a journey toward creating a life--not just a career, but a LIFE--that is more meaningful than the same old routine so many of us have found ourselves trapped in.

If you've spent a lot of time studying personal development, some of these concepts will be familiar: choices lead to consequences, belief drives behavior, take responsibility for your outcomes.

For me, the most valuable part of this book was defining what success looks like for me in various areas. Some of those, like career, I have thought about extensively. Maybe excessively. Others I hadn't really given much thought, like physical. What does it mean to be physically successful? Maintaining a healthy weight is an obvious criteria, but I realized improving my posture when working is also an important goal.

Bain puts his formula for success as BOX: belief, opportunity, and excellence. This is a handy way to think about what we must get a handle on to succeed. My only disappointment with this book is that the final third is heavy on anecdotes and thin on exercises. For example, Bain writes "Discovering and managing opportunity take insight, skill, patience, and a clear vision..." yet offers no examples of how to develop one's skill at discovering opportunity.

Which is why I say this book is a first step. It is an inspiring read and demonstrates that success is dependent upon our inner strengths and not outer circumstances. I trust that others in the field will provide some of the details, such as what managing opportunity looks like. Bain's primary mission in this book--and it is accomplished--is to get us moving in the right direction.

Barely sixteen years old, Kevin Fletcher was the driver of the car the night of the fatal wreck that cost the life of his best friend. Kevin takes an opportunity to do one final thing for his mother as a gift of love. Deciding to take time to repair the flower garden that the two of them had enjoyed when he was a child, he returns to his childhood home for a short time. Little does he know that God has plans for him to remain in the town and repair relationships with people who once cared for him many years before...and perhaps correct the mistakes he had made that terrible night Robbie was killed.

Kevin's Homecoming is more than just a story about forgiveness and healing. Many demons from Kevin's past will come back to haunt and torment him. He reunites with his high school sweetheart and ignites an old sibling rivalry born of jealousy and rejection. Many of the town's residents do not trust a convict, regardless of their childhood.

In Episode 3, Kevin reunites with his former mentor and pastor, James Canton and visits his childhood church for the first time in ten years. Another nemesis surfaces in the form of the town sheriff, who still harbors a grudge over the fatal accident and does not feel that Kevin has suffered enough.

Engaging

Episode one of homecoming is an account of a young man Brandon Fletcher that endured a prison sentence as a result of his irresponsible actions of driving drunk and killing his best friend. His release from prison finds him lonely and not well accepted in the town. In his struggle to stay or leave he encounters a young boy that meets him at a gravesite and shares generosity and love making him reconsider things,
This is an exciting first episode that Eddie Dollgener will build upon. The author is able to keep the reader engaged to where they feel a part of the drama as if right there. The Christian overtones makes it a good family novel to be shared by all.

A great book that is no longer appreciated by many

That "The Late George Apley" is so little read is amazing and saddening for it indicts publishers, book sellers and readers. This is a great book that is far too well written to be appreciated by modern readers who seem satisfied by books that feature explicit sex, or violence or whatever but not by great writing and intelligent characterization. The commercial side of the book business is, apparently, interested only in making as much money as possible and so produces mostly trash designed to lure the innocent readers of the 21st century. A striking example of this can be found in the books available on the Kindle list where there are virtually no classics or books worth reading.
To get back to my review of "The Late George Apley", I will start by saying that it is a very careful and thoughtful study of a man who was a victim of his heritage. As the son of a Boston Brahmin, his future is settled by his parents' manipulation of how he saw the world. While this is a very different rearing than most of us alive in 2009 have had, it was described in delightful detail by Mr. Marquand. That George Apley was unprepaired to deal with his times provides the real humor that Marquand brought to the story and also broadcasts a message to parents about the dangers of falling too far behind the times. With this book John P Marquand won the 1939 Pulitzer Prize for fiction. The award was richly deserved, and that so few have read it supports my contentions about the failings of all aspects of modern literature.

Freedom's just another word for...

THE LATE GEORGE APLEY is not an action novel. Not much happens. It's the fictional biography of an upper class, proper, Bostonian man who lived in the late 1800's & early 1900's, as supposedly written by a friend after Apley's death at the urging of Apley's son, who has provided letters and other documents on which the story is purportedly based. The turning point in Apley's life occurs when, as a young man, he falls in love with a girl "not of the proper set", and is somehow (the text is vague here)forced by his family to relinquish her. Much of the rest of the book is some version of, "What if...", and "Where does one's obligation to oneself end and one's obligation to others begin?" I found this really interesting, because the same question is very relevant today. Today we marry whomever we choose, have children whenever we want (in or out of marriage), divorce whenever it seems called for, say whatever we feel like saying. Are we happier? That's the question Apley asks. It's a really good question.

Older cities on America's East Coast - Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Charleston come to mind - have social traditions based on family ties, and to a large extent, resistance to change. In a sense, John Marquand is the prime historian of America's social order. and changing values. "THE LATE GEORGE APLEY" is an excellent starting point for those who want to read this prolific author. "WICKFORD P{OINT" should be next.

One word...Wow!

First off wow!wow! This was a great read. The description, the raw emotion that jumped off the pages was so vivid, that I felt I was right there. The characters were brought to life in a remarkable way. This story of true and pure love, redemption and forgiveness was told well. I cant wait for this authors next book.

Long Overdue

Tiffany Knightly wants to get her business in order in Sing A New Song by Michelle Lindo Rice. Tiffany has done well for herself with her singing career, which made taking care of her daughter, Karlie, easy. When Tiffany learns she is dying from cancer, Tiffany wants to make sure her daughter, Karlie, is taken care of. Tiffany decides to move back to her hometown to face her past so that her daughter can have a future.

The only problem with Tiffany's happily ever after is that she has to approach four men from her past to find out who is Karlie's biological father. Tiffany knows this has to be done in order to see if Karlie's father will be able to properly take care of her when Tiffany is gone. In the process of rectifying her past issues and mistakes, Tiffany rekindles friendships and faces fears that she has worked hard to forget. Tiffany soon finds out that she may be in a test that will strengthen her faith or have her turning away from God's plan.

Sing A New Song was a compelling story of a mother trying to do right by her daughter. It should not shock me that a mother would wait so many years to acknowledge the father of her child since it happens every day. I applaud the author for sharing a wonderful story of forgiveness and faith. I enjoyed the characters, plot and anticipation of finding out who was the father and this kept my attention until the end. I would have never guessed that Sing A New Song was a debut novel from this author's writing style. I look forward to reading more of her work. I recommend Sing A New Song to others.

Betrayal, and Forgiveness

This book will bring you to tears. Ms Lindo-Rice has written such a compelling read. I could not put it down, and she made each of the Characters appear so real.
As a young girl Tiffany Knightly was betrayed by someone who was supposed to protect her, her step-father. When her mother also betrays her, and blames it all on Tiffany, what can she do. She acts out like a lot of teens would...she becomes pregnant, and does not know which of the four teens are the father.
How could a mother not be there for her child? Makes me sick!! Tiffany has been there every step of the way for her daughter Karlie. She has made the big time as a famous singer, and they are not hurting financially, but she has been given the worse news you could get. Tiffany is dying of lung cancer!
How do you tell your fifteen year old daughter you are not going to be there for her? She certainly cannot depend on the mother who betrayed her.
She does decide to go back to Hempstead NY, and look into who is her daughter's Dad?? Of the four, a few of them have made a good life, there is one, who we hope is not her Dad. One of them Thomas, did marry Tiffany and thinks he is her Dad.
We get to the core of these families, and Tiffany touches all of them. Also she is reunited with her friend Myra, and unknown to Myra her husband Neil. Neil has had contact with Tiffany for many years. It is platonic, but loving relationship.
This is a story of a strong love of God, men and woman who are tempted, but have a strong bond with The Almighty. We also hope during this story, that Tiffany rebuilding her relationship with God, will be healed. Yes we do find out who is Karlie's father, and there is an epilogue, so all is wrapped up. Enjoy!

A must read for science fiction fans from an up and coming author!

Mr. Turkot takes a turn into science fiction after his successful Darkin fantasy series. In this book you'll find Turkot's crisp and descriptive writing style, without the heavy-handedness so common of other works in this genre. While this book is the first in a series, I found myself satisfied upon the conclusion of the book, with just enough loose ends to build anticipation for the next episode. As a long-time lover of classic science fiction series by the likes of Isaac Asimov, I am very glad to have discovered this new and refreshing contribution for those of us who dream often of the stars.

Specific humor

Form this sample (episode 1 and 2) I can describe this book as sf comedy. Maybe it is not intentional, but I can't described it differently. The plot and situations are rather totally unbelievable but I don't suppose it is a flaw in this type of book. If one likes such specific humor than this book can be very good.
I wasn't dissatisfied but wasn't satisfied enough to buy the rest episodes, too.

Totally left lost and wondering.

It seems like you are brought into the middle of the story, then as you start to get the point of it it ends. Not a lot mentioned about what his crime was or to whom or if he had a good reason. You get that he loves his kid and wants to get back with his former wife eve if it means risking his life to do so. Some details about the destruction of his ship and being rescued by a crazy android. The story could have more details or even a prequel to fill you in on his life and why he ended up where he did more depth could also be used on the main character as well. It has promise of being a good story I just hope the second part goes a little better.

Fun, Romantic, Intense teen read-Not just for horse-lovers.

This book was great and I definitely recommend it! With a bit of everything, A Horse Worthy Name is filled with characters your bound to feel-for and compare throughout the novel.

Every summer, Sylvia goes to visit her grandmother on her farm. This summer, she is almost 17. Also, this summer, there is a new horse-care-taker. The story tells about her Sylvia's adventures, as you find her growing from a clumsy teenager into a young-adult.

You'll find yourself laughing out loud at familiar story-situations, and at the characters. This is a smooth read, but you can also think about it. I can't think of any age-limit, though I would say 12 or 13 up. Try it out! :)

A sweet story, yet avoiding the sugary sweetness and keeping the language tight and compact. No profanities, no heavy themes, yet no moralizing or sugar-coating anything, either.

A romantic read, perfect for young girls!

The book tells a story of a young girl named Sylvia that spends every summer at her grandmother's farm. However, this year a new young man is working at the stalls and he instantly draws Sylvia's attention. Sylvia finds herself developing feelings for her new friend, however, something doesn't seem quite right about him... and what about her child-hood friend Vince, whom she so dearly missed?...

A wonderful read that includes both romance and suspense. It will hold your attention to the last page as you will get to know the characters and root for them as the story unfolds.

I would highly recommend as a fun and easy read for ages 13 and up!

The optimism grows from familiarity with the field of developmental psychopathology. It seems evident that this approach has much to offer the field of eating disorders. This book is an early step in the integration of developmental psychopathology into theorizing, research, treatment, and prevention of eating disorders. It addresses four specific goals:
* to introduce the principles and methodologies of developmental psychopathology,
* to review the work of developmental psychologists in several major areas of behavior relevant to understanding the causes, treatment, and prevention of eating disorders,

Great learning tool.

I really recommend the alphabet cards. the vowels are excellent learning tool. I just wish they'd teach us more Hindi words, but using English teaches you the pronunciation.

About the Author
Avery Corman (b. 1935) is an American author best known for his novels Kramer vs. Kramer and Oh, God!, which inspired classic feature films. Born and raised in the Bronx, Corman worked as a freelance writer for most of his early career before his first novel was published in 1971. Corman has written powerfully of family relations, divorce, and midlife crisis.

Great novel that became even greater movie

I'm surprised there aren't any reader reviews on this book. I was recently watching a biography of Meryl Streep and of course they went into considerable detail about her supporting role in the film Kramer vs. Kramer. It had been years since I watched the film and I'm recently divorced with young children so I made a point of watching it again. After gaining a new appreciation for the film and relating somewhat to Ted Kramer I decided to read the novel the movie is based on. The book does not disappoint. One can see that the storyline did not change dramatically when it was adapted for the screenplay. The dialogue in the movie is much richer as the novel is telling the story in third person. Conversations in the novel are more brief and there are a lot of unspoken thoughts that we learn through Avery Corman's narrative.

The pace of the book is pleasantly fast and Corman's sense of humor comes through. It's easy to forget how groundbreaking a book this was at a time when the only men who had custody of their children were widowers. It would have been a shame if this book had never been made into a movie since its informed an entire generation or more about the virtues of fatherhood. Seeing the movie again and reading the book have made me want to be even closer to my children.

There are some small details that are different in the book. For example in the film Ted Kramer works at an ad agency. In the book he sells advertising space for magazines, a related profession. In the book Ted Kramer loses his job twice, neither time was because of anything he did. He simply was a man who worked in a volatile industry where companies move and/or close their doors.

The biggest difference between the film and the book is the character of Joanna Kramer. In the movie Joanna who could have easily been seen as a villain appears very sympathetic in her court appearance. In the end she allows Ted to keep custody of the boy, Billy in an act of selfless love. SPOILER ALERT:

In the book, Joanna simply calls Ted to tell him she can't do it, that she can't take on the responsibilities of raising a child. Despite her alleging in court that she had mistakenly conflated her unhappiness in her marriage with her motherhood and that she "had to" leave the child behind to become healthy again, her final actions belie that narrative. Joanna is simply a flake unfit to be the primary caregiver. When faced with the court's judgement in her favor she once again becomes overwhelmed with the feelings of helplessness that drove her away in the first place. It becomes obvious that the source of her unhappiness was not her marriage to Ted, it WAS, in fact, the relationship with her son Billy. As a friend of mine is fond of saying dryly when he posts articles from newspapers about bizarre family stories, "parenting is not for everyone." The fact that parenting was not for Joanna doesn't make her a terrible person but in this case the best interests of the child were clearly to remain with the father, contrary to the conventional wisdom and legal precedents of the time.

See the movie, read the book, be good mothers and fathers regardless of your marital status; it's the most rewarding job you'll ever have.

Powerful Story About Parenthood

I saw the movie before I read the book and it's one of the more successful literary adaptations I've seen...it might actually be more effective than the source material. Which isn't to say the source material isn't very good in its own right. There's a legal philosophy known as the "tender years doctrine", which basically boils down to the belief that women are presumed to be better parents of very small children. There was a time when it was applied essentially automatically to grant a mother custody of a young child, almost regardless of the circumstances of the situation. This book, and its big-screen adaptation, were a part of helping drive a social shift away from that doctrine, ultimately making a difference in how custody law is determined by the courts.

The story is simple, with a straightforward plot: Ted and Joanna Kramer get married and have a son. Joanna stays home to raise him, but finds herself increasingly unsatisfied by an entirely home-and-child-based existence. Ted is unsympathetic, believing child-rearing to be Joanna's responsibility, particularly while their son is small. So Joanna leaves. Ted is has no choice but to assume full parental duty in her absence. The couple divorces and Joanna signs away her custody rights. After over a year, in which the father and son become extremely close and Ted completely rearranges his life and his thinking to be the father his son deserves, Joanna returns out of the blue, demanding custody. And she gets it, based on the tender years doctrine.

I didn't feel compelled to spoiler alert any of that, because the book and movie have been around so long that the conclusion is no longer a surprise. But also because the power of the book comes not from the outline of the story, but from how it's told. The beginning portions, detailing how Ted and Joanna came to be married, could in large part take place in the present day. They don't end up together because of their undying love, but because they're both bored of the singles scene and the other is good enough. Joanna's frustration at being forced into the primary caregiver role, at the expense of her own desires to be a contributing member of outside society, also feels like it could be written about any number of women today. We watch Ted go from the kind of man who insists that his wife stay home to take care of their son even though she doesn't want to, to the kind of man whose whole world is his son, slowly and organically. It's not forced or rushed or false, which makes the gut punch of Joanna's return that much harder to take. It ends happily enough, with Joanna relinquishing her victory and Ted retaining custody. The novel makes its point without preaching, and is all the more powerful for so doing.
