N. T. Wright is the former Bishop of Durham in the Church of England and one of the world's leading Bible scholars. He is now serving as the chair of New Testament and Early Christianity at the School of Divinity at the University of St. Andrews. He is the author of over 50 books including the highly acclaimed series Christian Origins and the Question of God.

Superb in every way

Volume 1 was a great book and should be read ahead of this one, but this one cannot be out done. It is difficult to speak of this work without sounding overly enthused about the importance of this book for the understanding of Jesus.

The first 144 pages of this book are spent addressing the two main camps that have dominated the landscape of study for the last 100 years. The two camps are Wrede (who see Jesus as a teacher of timeless truth) and Sweitzer (who see Jesus as an eschatalogical prophet announcing the Kingdom). Wright lines up scholar after scholar and puts them in one camp or the other. Some of the scholars dealt with are Bultman, Crossan, and Borg and several others. Wright himself comes down on the side of the "Sweitzerbahn", but with many disagreements. Sweitzer saw Jesus as anouncing the "second coming" within a generation. As a result the disciples were either disappointed or modified the tale. Wright maintains that Jesus was not predicting the "second coming" but the vindication of the Son of Man through resurrection and the predicted destruction of the Temple by the Romans.

Wright then proceeds to talk about Jesus as a prophet who announced the coming destruction of the Temple by his actions and his words and the reconstitution of Israel in himself. In the process Jesus condemnns the Jewish establishments of his day who saw themselves as the people of God around Torah and Temple and instead redefines the people of God or Israel as those who trust him for his way of being Israel.

This book addresses the why of the crucifixion from the standpoint of the opponents of Jesus. Wright's conclusion was that Jesus was a threat to the Jewish establishment, especially the Temple, but also Torah itself and he was a threat to Rome because he was acting and speaking as Messiah.

Wright, rightly I think, believes the central message of Jesus was the exile is coming to an end, Yahweh is returning to Israel, and Yahweh is becoming king.

Wright works out the synoptic message and does not leave many if any stones unturned in the doing so. He has drawn a line in the sand and anyone who wishes to cross over into an honest assessment of the life and message of Jesus must deal with what Wright has to say in order to get there. I recommend this book for everyone, but especially serious Bible students and scholars.

If I had to find a weakness it would be in Wright not giving John's gospel equal say. It is not that he does not uses John at all, but John does seem to take a back seat to the synoptics.

Insightful, thorough, and often brilliant scholarship

I am refraining from a very lengthy treatment of the topics in Wright's book largely because other reviewers have treated them in such depth. Overall, Wright sets forth an extremely well supported argument, placing Jesus's work in a context of the Jewish prophetic tradition which is completely orthodox yet far from what most would consider "conventional" devotional approaches. He well refutes "Jesus Seminar" types, though his tendency to dismiss prestigious scholars in a few sentences does seem a bit smug at times.
My difficulty was in being left with some rather puzzling questions, which is why I withheld a "fifth star." Much of Wright's thesis is built on Jesus's message having been highly grounded in an apocalyptic tradition (which Wright explains clearly and in depth), and on its being quite revolutionary (in the sense of "going against the grain," not inciting to violence.) Wright develops two points in this category - first, that Jesus's message greatly used familiar images yet presented them in a fashion which was shocking because it "re-wrote" the underlying tales of exodus and vindication and applied them to Himself. Secondly, Wright sets forth that these messages had to be carefully cloaked or they would have incited the people to riot. He particularly uses the parables' messages to illustrate both themes.
Unless the first-century hearers had read Tom Wright's work, there are several, glaring loose ends in this argument. However familiar images of exodus, exile, and restoration may have been, and however well embedded in the thought of scholars at Qumran, it does not seem credible that an audience of fishermen, carpenters, and tent-makers would have immediately connected the parable of the Prodigal Son with the images of Israel and Jesus as the deliverer King which Wright develops. Indeed, the Temple scholars may have seen the subtle message, but how would this cause a general riot, particularly if the message was deliberately obscure?
Many sections of the book are true "eye openers," particularly those dealing with the prophetic and apocalyptic aspects of Jesus's ministry. It is generally a brilliant work, well-suited for personal reading but also for use as a university or adult education text.

Really badly written and about as clear as mud.

Really badly written and about as clear as mud. The bad grammar in the book description is exactly how this whole thing is written. I have 7 years experience in procurement and am trying for a promotion in my own department. I saw this and thought: "Perfect! Something to help me get ready for the interview!" No, not so much. The formatting is bad. It's riddled with grammatical errors. It's not indexed. I have no idea if the guy who wrote this has any idea what he's talking about because I never found any actual sample interview questions, just a confusing mess of bold text in jumbo font and random hot button words strung sort of into sentences.

About the Author
Christopher D. Kolenda is a retired U.S. Army colonel who served three tours of duty in Afghanistan. As a task force commander in 2007-08, in Kunar and Nuristan provinces, his unit pioneered an innovative approach to counterinsurgency incorporating armed diplomacy, conflict resolution, and both violent and non-violent leverage that broke apart the insurgency, turned the population against the enemy, and dramatically improved the levels of security and governance in that volatile region. Since then he has shaped every critical strategic review for Afghanistan and Pakistan since 2009, led the team that drafted the McChrystal assessment and ISAF strategy, penned the 2009 ISAF counterinsurgency guidance, and influenced myriad other strategic and tactical initiatives that have set conditions for success in Afghanistan.

Kolenda is the editor and coauthor of Leadership: The Warrior's Art and has published numerous articles in professional journals.

Outstanding and Well-Written Book on Counterinsurgency

Christopher Kolenda's book is a wonderful blend of storytelling and lessons to be learned regarding counterinsurgencies in the twenty-first century. Kolenda masterfully takes the reader into his world, and what an amazing world that is. Through the magic of simulations that make you feel as though you are with a commander as he fights an insurgency in a fictitious country, Kolenda is able to bring to life all the major participants in the conflict, including the insurgents, local population, local government, and of course, the commander and his troops. As he leads his troops into battle, the commander learns, to his surprise, that decisions he made did not always have the results he intended. It is only through repeated simulations that he learns from his previous mistakes and is able to discover the right combination of policies and actions that could work to defeat the insurgency. One does not have to be an expert on counterinsurgencies to appreciate this book. It is written in a highly engaging style that should appeal to a wide range of readers.

Critique on book about counter-insurgency

The book provided details of how to run a counter-insurgency and does prove that it is necessary to gain the support of the local population when fighting an insurgency. However, there are many forms of guerilla warfare - i.e. of the urban variety as in Syria or in open sparsely populated countryside as in Afghanistan and each kind has to be fought in a different manner. This book covered the latter type of counter-insurgency and was interesting.

Early Jeeves/Wooster, and Reggie Pepper too

This was the earliest (1919) of Wodehouse's short story collections to mention Jeeves in the title, and these are very early Jeeves/Wooster stories. But only half of the stories in this volume are set in the Wooster household. The other half of these stories feature Reggie Pepper. Pepper can be thought of as a proto-Bertie, but he has no Jeeves-like character around. The Reggie Pepper stories are also similar to the Jeeves/Wooster stories in that they are written in Reggie's voice. Once Wodehouse got rolling with the Jeeves/Wooster stories, he abandoned Reggie Pepper. I think there are only eight Reggie Pepper stories in total, with half of them found in this collection.

A few points are worth noting. The earliest Jeeves/Wooster story is not in this collection. That first story was "Extricating Gussie", which is to be found in the 1917 collection "The Man With Two Left Feet." It is in "Extricating Gussie" that Jeeves and Wooster travel to New York. All the Jeeves/Wooster stories in "My Man Jeeves" are set in New York as well. Another factor to bear in mind is that most of these early stories were later reworked, and appear in "Carry On, Jeeves." The story "Leave it to Jeeves" appears in "Carry On" as "The Artistic Career of Corky", with the first few paragraphs re-written for that version. The stories "Jeeves and the Unbidden Guest" and "Jeeves and The Hard-Boiled Egg" appear in "Carry On" with no obvious alterations. Also, the story "Helping Freddie" appears in "Carry On" as "Fixing it for Freddie", but in that case the story has been changed from a Reggie Pepper vehicle to one featuring Bertie and Jeeves - the plot and much of the language carry directly through this transformation.

In short, three of the four Jeeves/Wooster stories, and one of the Reggie Pepper stories, appear, with varying degrees of alteration, in "Carry On, Jeeves." The only Jeeves/Wooster item in this collection that doesn't appear in "Carry On" is "The Aunt and the Sluggard."

Jeeves and Jarvis- a wonderful concoction!

What can I say about P.G. Wodehouse's stories that hasn't already been said? They're brilliant! Delightful! Charming! Pleasant as a post-prandial brandy! It has, however, been said that for full effect these stories must be read aloud. Well, really, I say. Who's got time? What? Martin Jarvis! That's who! The finest audio book reader to ever grace my hi fi! Nobody brings Bertie Wooster and Jeeves to life with the elegance and charm of Mr. Jarvis. His range of voices is surperb! His delivery is spot on, and his love of the material is evident.
You may wonder how I can say his readings surpass even those of Mssrs. Fry and Laurie. The answer is simple. The televised version (which is excellent) cannot contain every syllable, every illiteration Wodehouse penned. The audio version can!
The stories here include two from CARRY ON JEEVES, finishing out that selection, as well as three others. My only complaint, if that can be said, is that the three other stories do not involve The Jeeves/Wooster duo. But who cares? They are wonderful anyway.
This collection is a delight and truly worth adding to your collection- even if you own the books. However, I don't recommend listening to them while driving. You may lose control during a fit of laughter. Vive le Jeeves! Vive le Jarvis! Vive le Wodehouse!

Classic Wodehousiana!

Martin Jarvis' reading of My Man Jeeves runs circles around Jonathan Cecil's reading of *anything* (for more ranting on Cecil, see Psmith: Journalist). He simply embodies the characters of Bertie Wooster, Jeeves, Biffy, Corky, and all the cast (albeit with the same typical attempt at an American accent).
This recording consists of the two stories from the printed Carry On, Jeeves collection that were left out of the CD copy of the Carry On, Jeeves audiobook--one of which has Jeeves himself as the narrator--as well as three stories starring Bertie Wooster's predecessor, Reggie Pepper.
Pepper by himself isn't as funny or touching as the relationship between Jeeves and Wooster, but the predicaments are identical to those that Bertie would find himself getting into. The only difference is that Reggie manages to extricate himself from the troubles, unlike Bertie, who relies on the wiles of his man, Jeeves.
Either of this or Carry On, Jeeves would appeal to the casual Wodehouse fan, and are perfect for long road trips or any other situation where a laugh is needed. Wodehouse exceeds all others in humor and, one assumes, will remain that way for centuries to come.

The study seeks to determine whether there are any common trends or obvious similarities that transcend national and cultural boundaries. From this information, best practices can be identified to improve the system of any police organization.

The data from the survey raises a host of issues essential to police management. Are traditional or modern appraisal systems more preferable to police personnel? Are field and command officers’ perceptions of the performance evaluation instruments in their departments similar or do they differ from those of their subordinates? Asking these and other critical questions, the authors also examine the relationship between the officer’s perception of the appraisal system and his or her rank, taking into account level of education, gender, age, and years of service.

Employing both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, this study yields important findings and valuable insights for police organizations as to which characteristics an appraisal process should have for the best quality system. Lessons learned from this study should provide guidance to future efforts to design better appraisal systems and may also contribute to heightened focus on nationwide assessments of evaluation practices and standards for police organizations.

About the Author

Serdar Kenan Gul’s research interests include police management, performance appraisal, comparative criminal justice, and quantitative research methods. After working at different units of the Turkish National Police Organization as a ranking officer for almost 15 years, Dr. Gul is currently an associate professor and researcher at the Center for Security Management and a faculty member at the College of Security Sciences at Turkish National Police Academy. He teaches human resources management, public administration, and police management courses. He is also editor for the Turkish Journal of Police Studies, a peer-reviewed scientific journal.

Paul O’Connell has been a full-time member of the criminal justice faculty at Iona College in New Rochelle, New York, since 1994. He began his professional career in criminal justice in 1981, serving the New York City Police Department (NYPD) first as a police officer, and then as a police academy instructor, in-service trainer, and curriculum developer. After receiving an MPA and JD, he worked as a trial attorney. He teaches at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, conducts funded research, and lectures widely on the topics of police performance measurement, integrity management, and law enforcement training systems.
