About the Author
Christopher D. Kolenda is a retired U.S. Army colonel who served three tours of duty in Afghanistan. As a task force commander in 2007-08, in Kunar and Nuristan provinces, his unit pioneered an innovative approach to counterinsurgency incorporating armed diplomacy, conflict resolution, and both violent and non-violent leverage that broke apart the insurgency, turned the population against the enemy, and dramatically improved the levels of security and governance in that volatile region. Since then he has shaped every critical strategic review for Afghanistan and Pakistan since 2009, led the team that drafted the McChrystal assessment and ISAF strategy, penned the 2009 ISAF counterinsurgency guidance, and influenced myriad other strategic and tactical initiatives that have set conditions for success in Afghanistan.
Kolenda is the editor and coauthor of Leadership: The Warrior's Art and has published numerous articles in professional journals.

Outstanding and Well-Written Book on Counterinsurgency

Christopher Kolenda's book is a wonderful blend of storytelling and lessons to be learned regarding counterinsurgencies in the twenty-first century. Kolenda masterfully takes the reader into his world, and what an amazing world that is. Through the magic of simulations that make you feel as though you are with a commander as he fights an insurgency in a fictitious country, Kolenda is able to bring to life all the major participants in the conflict, including the insurgents, local population, local government, and of course, the commander and his troops. As he leads his troops into battle, the commander learns, to his surprise, that decisions he made did not always have the results he intended. It is only through repeated simulations that he learns from his previous mistakes and is able to discover the right combination of policies and actions that could work to defeat the insurgency. One does not have to be an expert on counterinsurgencies to appreciate this book. It is written in a highly engaging style that should appeal to a wide range of readers.

Critique on book about counter-insurgency

The book provided details of how to run a counter-insurgency and does prove that it is necessary to gain the support of the local population when fighting an insurgency. However, there are many forms of guerilla warfare - i.e. of the urban variety as in Syria or in open sparsely populated countryside as in Afghanistan and each kind has to be fought in a different manner. This book covered the latter type of counter-insurgency and was interesting.
