"Having a Great Priest over the house of God"

In my view Biblical typology is one of the most under-used methods of instruction, and one of the most important ways to buttress sound doctrine.. This book has been a tremendous inspiration. Anderson looks at Scripture from a perspective that most overlook. Commenting on Heb 10:21, Chapter 7 begins, "Having a Great Priest over the house of God". Upon this depends our right of access to the divine presence. For His priesthood is a necessity, not only because of human frailty and need, but because of the holiness and majesty of God". This is typical of Anderson's ability to add richness to the Word without perverting it's meaning. I recommend this book to anyone seeking to discover the great truth and beauty of redemption.

About the Author
Ellery Queen was a pen name created and shared by two cousins, Frederic Dannay (1905–1982) and Manfred B. Lee (1905–1971), as well as the name of their most famous detective. Born in Brooklyn, they spent forty-two years writing, editing, and anthologizing under the name, gaining a reputation as the foremost American authors of the Golden Age “fair play” mystery. Although eventually famous on television and radio, Queen’s first appearance came in 1928, when the cousins won a mystery-writing contest with the book that was later published as The Roman Hat Mystery. Their character was an amateur detective who uses his spare time to assist his police inspector uncle in solving baffling crimes. Besides writing the Queen novels, Dannay and Lee cofounded Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine, one of the most influential crime publications of all time. Although Dannay outlived his cousin by nine years, he retired Queen upon Lee’s death.

Quite possibly one of the greatest mysteries ever written

Not even Agatha Christie in her prime could construct a detective story plot of this complexity, with so many delicious twists and turns. Ellery Queen investigates the murder of a man who was found mysteriously buried in another man's coffin. There are many suspects, and as the story progresses the plot just gets more and more complex (for most mysteries it's the reverse).
What's notable about THE GREEK COFFIN MYSTERY is the number of solutions. There are no less than four solutions to the mystery, but only one of them--the last one--is the true one. The final solution comes as a genuine shock--when I found out who the murderer was, I was momentarily tempted to throw down the book in disbelief. But Ellery Queen's careful deductive processes show that only (blank) could possibly have committed the crimes. This is an absolute tour de force, a must-read for mystery readers like myself who have, until this point, lived under the illusion that only English writers can construct ingenious plots. Ellery Queen has more than proven that the quality can be an American one as well.

This is one of the first Ellery Queen's books that I read. Before I used to read books by 'Agatha Christie'. Being introduced to EQ character and his method of deduction for the first time had me hungry for more. As with the other reviews regarding this book I agree with them totally. The grand finale is mind boggleling.

A Gem - Superbly Crafted - An Ellery Queen Classic

The Ellery Queen stories will remain among the most remarkable American classic mysteries ever written. And this superbly constructed story, The Greek Coffin Mystery, is among the best of Ellery Queen.
Ellery Queen first appeared in June, 1929 in The Roman Hat Mystery, followed by The French Powder Mystery (1931), and The Dutch Shoe Mystery (1932). The plot in the fourth story, The Greek Coffin Mystery (1932), actually pre-dates The Roman Hat Mystery and reveals a younger, less-experienced Ellery Queen. We readers see an overly confident Ellery Queen stumble in his deductions and are led through not one, but a several flawed solutions.
Not only is this "younger and cockier" Ellery Queen misled and chastised, but it will be a rare reader indeed that does not likewise become ensnared in faulty deductions and erroneous conclusions. Ellery Queen regains any lost prestige in his final, remarkable deductions that lead unerringly to the actual solution.
The New York City setting is an old, drooping brownstone at 11 East Fifty-Fourth Street. Adjacent to the Georg Khalkis residence is one of the oldest private cemeteries in the city. Georg Khalkis had died, apparently of heart failure. His burial is in an old brick-lined subterranean crypt.
I am hesitant to say anything more about the plot itself for fear that I might unwittingly say too much. Just be prepared to be surprised.
The reader acquainted with Ellery may notice that his penchant for quoting literature (and thereby exercising his ivy league education) is more marked in The Greek Coffin Mystery than in his later stories. We encounter literary and philosophical observations in English, French, German and Latin. Ellery is even able to roughly translate a note in modern Greek from his knowledge of the classical Greek language. Who but Ellery Queen would quote Byron, Goethe, Terence, La Fontaine, Chaucer, Rousseau, and Schopenhauer while solving a muder?
Like Nero Wolfe, another famous master of deduction, Ellery also enjoys an occasional vocabulary excess, treating the reader to expressions like `eremitic in its furnishings', `caparisoning his cousin', `greatest animus', and `the charming amanuensis'.
The Greek Coffin Mystery is classic Ellery Queen. The plot is intriguing, the characters are memorable, and Ellery Queen's exercise in deduction is simply dazzling. The Greek Coffin Mystery is no longer in print, but used copies, especially in paperback, are still available. Make the effort to find a copy. This is definitely a five star Ellery Queen masterpiece.

I truly enjoyed MitM for a number of reasons, Being familiar with many areas around southwest FL, I recognized several in this book. Of course, the names were changed to protect the innocent! The author uses humor, landscape and good character development to create a delightful whodunit. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery.

a bit of beautifying

The new edition is mostly a version of the old one plus a few new topics that were added in January of 2012.

The book was revamped to include more graphics and better layout.

It is now using a larger and more readable font. It makes reading a lot easier.

At 1430 pages overall it is a very large book.

No thanks, I'll buy the hardcover edition for 1/2 the cost. E-editions should be less expensive anyway. The author types his book electronically but it costs more to publish it electronically??? I doubt it.

Frustrating Book

Some of the gloves were beautiful (the ones with close up shots. Refer to #2 to see my frustration). However, I don't foresee myself using this book in the future because of two problems.

#1 - There is no pop up table of contents. If I need to go somewhere else in the book, I have to go back to the beginning and page over to the table of contents in the front of the book. And there are a lot of pages between the front of the book and the table of contents.

#2 - The pictures. I had two problems with the pictures. The first one was that you couldn't see some of the gloves very well. It looked like some of the pictures were taken focusing on the kids who happened to be wearing the gloves instead of the gloves. I couldn't tell if I liked the gloves on those pictures (but the pictures of the kids were beautiful). The second problem I had with the pictures is that there were no pictures in the adult section. If you wanted to take a look at the gloves, you had to go to the pictures in the kids section to see if you like them (the author made kids and adult versions of the same gloves, which I thought was very cool). So taking into account that there was no pop up table of contents, if you wanted to see the pictures you would have to go back to the beginning, page over a lot of pages to get to the table of contents to get to the kids version of the gloves. And then if you liked the kids version of the gloves and wanted to make the adult version, you would have to go back to the beginning, page over to the table of contents, and go back to the adult pattern. Of course, there's always the possibility that after seeing the gloves, you don't want to make them. So the process needs to be repeated to find a pair you like. Also if you are in the middle of an adult glove and want to see the picture, you would have to repeat the above process just for a glimpse at the picture. Too much work in my opinion.

Like I said, I don't foresee myself using this book because of these two problems. However, as stated above, the pictures that showed close up shots of the gloves showed that the gloves were beautiful. So this author shows a lot of promise. However, I think $9.99 is too much to pay for a book with these problems.

Had potential...

I'm sorry, but I can't recommend this book. It had potential and the sample chapters interested me enough to buy the book, but in the end I wanted to return it. And no, my low rating has nothing to do with grammar and punctuation...lol

I think the story line had amazing potential, but the way it played out just didn't work for me. Below is what frustrated me the most:

We learn that Kari (the heroine)was completely in love with the hero, Jake, when they were younger. They were a couple and he went off to college and she stayed home for reasons explained in the book. It's not clear if they were in a long distance relationship or if they broke up. She found out she was pregnant with his child and went to see him at college. She sees him with another girl and leaves, without confronting him. On the way home, she gets in an accident because she is so distraught and she loses the baby. She never talks to him again until 15 years later and he's moving in to the same apartment building.

Ok, so the author makes me feel for Kari and she explains how catching Jake with another girl and losing the baby changed her and the course of her life. This was a MAJOR event. I wanted to scream with how the story played out when Jake finds out the reason Kari hates/hated him so much. OMG! It pisses me off when the big moments come and then they are sloughed off, like it was no big deal.

1. It's not clear if they broke up when he went to college or if they had a long distance relationship. He asks her why she stopped answering his calls. She tells him that she came down to visit him and saw him with another girl. She said it hurt to know that he was able to get over her so quickly, when she was still in love with him. He tells her "You're wrong. I don't remember the girl. I loved you, Kari. I wanted us to be together." But, then later he thinks to himself how there had been a few girls, but they obviously didn't mean anything to him because he doesn't remember their names. If only Kari had called him ahead of time, then it all could have been avoided. Excuse me?! Our so called hero is letting us know if only he knew ahead of time she was coming, he could have made sure she never found out about it? His excuse is that he was just a kid.

2. Then later in the book, she tells him that she had been pregnant with his baby and lost it in an accident because she had been crying so hard when she caught him with the other girl. And then he thinks to himself "If she'd called and told him she was coming that weekend and not run off, the baby would still be alive, and he'd have dropped out of college and married her." That's great, you would marry her because of the baby, and not because of her.

Not enough time was given to these moments in the books and I don't think Jake realized how much he truly affected Kari. Jake should have shown more remorse and the author should have given more than two pages to these moments.

Unfortunately, it wasn't only the above that bothered me. I wasn't interested in the other characters in the story and felt like the story didn't really flow. It felt choppy.

A Hero Lies Within- Fantastic

Wow....what a fantantastic start to a new serial romance. This has started out great.

The reader is drawn in from page 1. The author Patrice Wilton has a natural gift in writing. You are immediately drawn to the characters. The characters are witty and full of personality. You feel like they are people that you really know. The dialogue is great....just the right amount of snark. And of course there is the intrigue of romantic conflict....lost love...the one that got away. This could of been just an ordinary book but the author has a true gift in story telling that goes above and beyond. Oh and I must mention....her story takes place in the Palm Beach area. I am from the area and the author is right on the mark with places and scenery.

I would highly recommend this serial. I can't wait for the next installment. Two weeks is just too long! Buy this book!

Terrific Book!

Patrice Wilton knows her heroes. This is from what I understand, part of the first of a terrific series. I don't know if I can wait to read the rest of it!! Returning veterans face a gambit of issues when they return and this hits home for me... I'm glad there will be more of these hero stories!
