But now he's got problems even his brothers can't help him survive.

His so-called girlfriend, Quinn, is going quick as mercury from daring to crazy. Meanwhile, Quinn's dancer friend Adam is throwing Nick off balance, forcing him to recognize a truth he'd rather shove back into the dark.

He can feel it--the atmosphere is sizzling. Danger is on the way. But whatever happens next, Nick is starting to find out--sometimes nothing you do can keep the peace.

A great read for fans of the series!
By Stephanie Verhaegen (Bookfever)
This series so far has been exciting and not so exciting for me. I loved Storm (Chris' story) and Elemental (Michael's novella) but I wasn't too thrilled about Spark (Gabriel's story). So when this book was accepted on NetGalley for me I was really curious to see what way this one would go. And wow! This was a great novella. I loved every single page of it and I just need more. I'm over the top thrilled for Nick's book coming in 2014. The wait is way too long!

Nick has always seem like the most stable of the Merrick brothers. He also was my least favorite brother but I'm really coming back from that. I love him now! Anyway, with this novella we see that Nick also struggled with a whole lot. His girlfriend Quinn, helping Michael with the family business, college and feelings he doesn't really want to admit to himself let alone everyone else. Yeah, Nick isn't the most stable one at all. Even he has a lot of problems.

This novella had both Nick and Quinn's point of view. Personally I don't particulary like Quinn. I was more interested in reading about Nick than Quinn's drama. Although she's really nice to Nick. And she's funny as hell. I loved Nick and Adam together, even if it was for a short period so far. They are so cute. I have a new favorite (potential) couple! *squeeeee*
I loved Nick's voice. His struggle with doing the right thing or following his own heart. It tears at me, really. I want him to be happy, that's how deeply I felt this story.

There really isn't anything negative to say at all, except that I wished this novella was longer and we didn't have to wait so long for Nick's book.

Breathless was an amazing novella that I enjoyed immensely. Any fan of The Elemental series or just of the Merrick brothers needs to read this. The series will feel so much more with what you know from these novellas. I love Brigid Kemmerer's writing. She really did an amazing job with this one and I want more!

A lesson about accepting your true self
By Sheena-kay Graham
I immediately got this off Netgalley in June because I had read another novella Elemental and was excited to see what Brigid would write next. Sad to say Breathless was no Elemental. It didn't give me the same drive to read right to the end and an immediate connection to the characters like Elemental did. But what it did give was a different story despite the repeated romance and special abilities element. The main character Nick seems to have a very good life. Despite the loss of his parents he has his brothers, his girlfriend and a really good head on his shoulders with a focus on higher education instead of girls and wild parties. But he has a secret, one he fears would tear his family apart faster than the air he has the ability to control. His girlfriend Quinn on the other hand is a mess. Look up disaster in the dictionary and you'll see her life as an example when explaining the definition. She thinks she's fat, unworthy and the only way to keep a boy around is to sleep with him. Nick is different but she is yet to learn just how different. Then her friend Adam comes into the picture and what was once a slow boil quickly explodes into disaster of epic proportions. Secrets are revealed, hearts are broken and friendship is tested to the limits.

What Breathless loses in maintaining my interest with a great attention grabbing story it re-energizes with a deep realistic story of a boy wanting to belong and be his true self. Nick can only see disaster if his secret is revealed but with the help of Quinn and maybe even Adam, he can learn to accept that living in truth is better than hiding behind a lie. This novella still tells a really good story and the underlying factor of sexuality is one of the big things that saves it from being a so-so story and one you'll want to read. Even if you have to do it in small doses to keep from getting bored with medium energetic storytelling. I am actually more excited for when this novella gets turned into a full length book. I can only hope Brigid will take what made Elemental great and use it to make Breathless full length novel fantastic. I recommend you read a sample first before deciding if this novella is for you but definitely recommend you get into this series. You'll be in for a terrific ride.

Nick Merrick is the quiet, level-headed brother. Not just out of all the brothers, but between him and his identical twin Gabriel. Physically the twins are exact matches, even their elements compliment each other Gabriel's being fire and Nick's being air. But they are polar opposites. As we learned in Spark, Gabriel's book, Gabriel is the quick tempered one, the athlete and more the protector. Gabriel also had an issue with pushing people away, letting people in and in a way acceptance. We never got a lot about Nick.. Where we got major glimpse of each brother in the past books and novellas, Nick we only got small glimpses of. In Breathless we leran that Nick is also very conflicted and has his own issues with acceptance... they're very different from Gabriel's. Nick is the scholarly type and keeps what he feels are expectations of him. We see that he never pushes the bar.In Breathless, we see Nick grapple with his issues and we see Quinn grapple with the issues we were introduced too the past couple books. Her self-esteem and family problems. We also meet Quinn's now dance partner Adam. Quinn has some happenings that Nick and Adam end up involved in and once again in the elementals series... sparks flew. We learn some new and needed to know things about Nick. There's a lot I want to say about Nick, but it would give away too much. I think people can pick it up from the synopsis really, but I don't want to ruin it. I will say I like the direction Kemmerer is taking Nick. It's bold and daring. We meet Adam in Breathless. We don't get a lot about him, but he seems like a sweetie. He seems to be sure of himself and what he wants in his life. Nick we see he has some cracks. He may be level-headed, but he isn't as self-assures as he comes off. He has his issues for sure. We also get a side character next to Quinn named Matt whom I would like and hope comes more into play in Nick's actual book. Quinn... I still don't like. I get she has issues that we really haven't touched the surface of, but she is just too dramatic for me. She is way too hostile for me too. I just... she irks me. Maybe that'll change when we get more. I don't know.Once again, the Elemental's world is one I love. It isn't far fetched and is created with every day life in mind. I love the abilities we see and that with the issues that come along with their abilities, we get realistic issues as well. I LOVE the Merrick boys!
