Resurrection Son of God V3: Christian Origins and the Question of God, by N. T. Wright

This book, third in Wright's series Christian Origins and the Question of God, sketches a map of ancient beliefs about life after death, in both the Greco-Roman and Jewish worlds. It then highlights the fact that the early Christians' belief about the afterlife belonged firmly on the Jewish spectrum, while introducing several new mutations and sharper definitions. This, together with other features of early Christianity, forces the historian to read the Easter narratives in the gospels, not simply as late rationalizations of early Christian spirituality, but as accounts of two actual events: the empty tomb of Jesus and his "appearances."

Review
"- 'The sweep of Wright's project as a whole is breathtaking. It is impossible to give a fair assessment of his achievement without sounding grandiose: no New Testament scholar since Bultmann has ever attempted - let alone achieved - such an innovative and comprehensive account of New Testament history and theology.' Richard B. Hays on The New Testament and the People of God

The definitve work on resurrection of this generation
By Samuel M Smith
This work should be required reading in seminaries the world over. Whether one agrees with Wright's thesis or not, no responsible student of the New Testament or Christian history can ignore this work.
Wright traces the development of the Christian belief in resurrection by contrasting it with the prevailing notions of life after death in the Jewish and Greek cultural worlds. What emerges is clear: nothing quite like the resurrection stories in the Gospels was ever in view before the evangelists wrote them down. He argues cogently that the differences in the resurrection stories in the gospels, far from proving their lack of trustworthiness, point toward a sense of awe and wonder that everyone involved felt regarding Jesus' appearances. This should be expected when someone has an experience that is literally the first of its kind in human history.
As a methodological point, I especially appreciate Wright's assertion that history is not made up of repeatable events, but unrepeatable events, such as Caesar crossing the Rubicon. No one expects Julius to march on Rome again any time soon, but no one seriously doubts the he did just that. The same criteria should be extended to the resurrection of Jesus.
I also enjoyed his point that dead people stayed dead in the ancient world just as in the modern (or is it post-modern?) one. Modern NT scholarship often assumes no one who lived in the first century knew anything at all about the world or how it operates, and therefore their understanding of the world needs correction through the lenses of the enlightenment.
As always, Wright writes with an almost devotional warmth and never slides into the dreaded trap of speaking theologese, though it's clear that he could if he so chose.
This work is likely to offend fundamentalists and liberals alike, which is always refreshing. Buy this book. You may hate it or it may change your life, but Wright's work is worth your money.

As Good as it Gets
By Reader From Aurora
`The Resurrection of the Son of God' is the third volume in N.T. Wright's Christian Origins and the Question of God series. An Anglican theologian and historian, Wright is widely recognized as one of the leading contemporary scholars in the field of New Testament studies.

Approximately 750 pages in length, this is a truly massive and monumental study of early Christian beliefs. Throughout the text Wright posits and champions two key theses, first, that early Christians understood the resurrection in physical bodily terms, and, second, that this view was radically unique, unparalleled in other ancient worldviews.

Wright provides a well constructed, erudite and comprehensive overview of ancient views of life after death and resurrection. He does yeomen work in collating and assessing an impressive range of Christian, Jewish and pagan perspectives. In the process Wright engages with the majority contemporary commentators in the field- an impressive accomplishment. Throughout he does an admirable job in handling one of the perennial challenges of historic religious study - the application methodological naturalism. That is, looking at the evidence in the appropriate critical manner without an a priori removal of supernatural options by presupposing a naturalist ontology.

Why did Christianity develop and take the shape that it did? How is this phenomenon to be explained? Wright argues persuasively that the early Christian answer to such questions was that Jesus had been bodily raised from the dead and validated as the son of God. He contends that despite many creative and speculative attempts during the previous two centuries, it remains the most convincing explanation. In making this argument Wright champions what in contemporary terms is often considered to be Christianity's most scandalous claim - that is, that it is true.

A brilliant work with too many strengths to mention. While not one of the author's major themes, I especially appreciated the discussion of the different gospel resurrection narratives and their challenges - i.e. the ending of Mark, Matthew's earth quake resurrection appearances, etc. (Raymond Brown's Death of the Messiah is also good in this regard). Wright's discussion of Paul is also helpful; it served as a corrective to some of my assumptions.

Overall, this text is as good as it gets in the field of New Testament studies. Wright has set a new standard in the study of early Christian views of the resurrection, valuable for students, academics, pastors, priests and laymen alike. Outstanding!

By A.F. Sanders
Wright succeeds in providing a highly organised historical account on what first century Jews and pagans meant when they used the word resurrection - if they used the term at all ! . In this context the testimonies of the New Testaments become much more vivid and alive than in main stream Theology
