A Sound Of Distant Thunder, by William E. Sherrill

A Sound Of Distant Thunder is Historical Fiction taking place during the last year of the American Civil War as it was experienced in Virginia. It centers on Petersburg, Virginia, where the citizens have managed to avoid most of the hardships of the war. That situation changes as the story opens in the spring of 1864. After failing to advance upon Richmond through direct attacks, The Union Army of the Potomac moves undetected in the direction of Petersburg. The arrival of a Union Cavalry advance marks the beginning of the interest that the Union Army has with the city of Petersburg. The Army of the Potomac arrives shortly thereafter, and it does not leave until the city has endured nine months of siege, which only ends with a horrible death march to Appomattox Courthouse, where the Army of Northern Virginia finally surrenders.
A Sound Of Distant Thunder tells of both the men fighting in the Army and the women fighting the battle of the home front.
This story centers around the Stoner family:
• Jacob Stoner, the strong patriarch who has managed to keep Oak Manor and his family isolated from the war due to a belief that it is wrong for Christians to fight. Jacob attempts to hold on to his faith and beliefs even in the midst of hardship over which he has no control.
• John Stoner, Jacob's eldest son, who has followed Jacob's lead in his attitude toward the war in spite of the repercussions he has personally experienced. John is suddenly faced with an anger that brings out a desire for bloodshed, and he becomes consumed with a hatred from which he may not be able to return.
• Emily Stoner, John's wife, who has resented the fact that her husband has refused to fight in a war that has already caused the death of her own father in combat, resulting in the erosion of her relationship with John. Emily suddenly finds herself the matriarch of the plantation in the absence of the men, and she struggles for the wisdom and strength to hold the family together in the midst of the siege.
• Sarah Stoner, Jacob’s only daughter who has desired nothing more than to honor her father and love her family. Sarah suddenly finds herself without those whom she has loved and to whom she has looked for strength, but she finds love and strength in places she had not looked for them.
• Paul Stoner, who, at the age of sixteen, cannot wait until he is old enough to join the Confederate cause in spite of his father's disapproval. Paul finds himself involved in more than he can manage when the fighting begins, and soon he is forced to make difficult decisions about himself, his family, and his beliefs.
•Taylor Kendall, Emily's brother, who has fought with the Stonewall Brigade since the onset of the war, and has been consumed with hatred since the death of his father two years prior. Taylor now enters back into the lives of the Stoners just as they begin to face their own hardships, and he is determined to stand by John even though he no longer has any hope for victory.
• Lindsey Archibald, who has fought beside Taylor for three years, and who now, unexpectedly, becomes a part of the Stoner household as the situation at Oak Manor rapidly gets worse. Lindsey, who has desired only to fight and survive the war, finds new motivations and desires.
•Hezekiah, Jacob’s faithful household servant, who loves the family and stands beside Emily and Sarah even though he has the opportunity to abandon them. Hezekiah proves to be an invaluable asset and source of strength and encouragement to the family.
Follow the lives of the Stoners along with Taylor and Lindsey as they encounter and endure the Battle of The Wilderness, the Bloody Angle, the Siege of Petersburg, Point Lookout Federal Prison Camp, Elmira Federal Prison Camp, the destruction of the Shenandoah Valley, and the death march toward Appomattox.

About the Author
William E. Sherrill was born in Bryson City, North Carolina, and currently lives in Greenville, South Carolina. He had an on again, off again relationship with the United States military that began with his childhood as the son of a career member of the Air Force. His relationship with the military continued when he joined the Army upon his graduation from High School in 1973.Later he was in the Army Reserves and, later still, in the South Carolina Army National Guard, with whom he served in combat in Iraq, and from which he finally retired in 2008 after having earned two Meritorious Service Medals, a Combat Action Badge, various other medals and awards, and four honorable discharges. “Some people collect baseball cards,” he used to tell those soldiers serving under him, “apparently I collect honorable discharges. I was never aiming at staying in the military long enough to retire; it just sort of sneaked up on me.” While serving in the National Guard as a combat medic, he worked in his civilian job in Nuclear Medicine. Along the way toward this retirement he was educated at Blue Ridge Technical College, Appalachian State University, NC State University, Southeastern Baptist Theological Institute, and Midlands Technical College. A Sound Of Distant Thunder is William’s first novel, and it draws from his years of knowledge about the life and habits of soldiers, from his personal experience with the power of love and friendship, and from his belief in God and God’s ability to work in the lives of people in spite of the hardships which they face - a lesson he has learned by personal experience during his entire adult life and from his time in combat.

Capitavating Civil War Drama
By Patsy Packer
This is l-o-n-g book BUT worth every minute of the reader's time! What a well written novel. It doesn't take long for you to become an integral part of the Stoner family who dwells outside of Petersburg, VA during the Civil War. What has been a calm, comfortable life suddenly takes new turns, most of them wrenching to say the least. You have the patriarch, Jacob, with strong beliefs and values, yet a deep love of family. John,Emily, Sarah & Paul Stoner - - -each a unique and carefully described personality with their own visions of the war itself. The reality of the war, how it impacts the mind, hearts and lives of those living in the midst of chaos and potential family divisions and how each are reconciled make this novel one to keep your interest to the very end. So much is learned about the Civil War! The old, the young and those in-between made many choices and had to live or die by them. If you love history and interesting characters, this book is for you. A complimentary copy of this book was provided for me to make an unbiased review.

A Family Spreads Their Wings
By Carol Jane Barnette
One of the most WONDERFUL books I have ever read, and for sure one of the very best Civil War novels written.
I am an avid Civil War reader who loves to find out all aspects of that conflict . "THUNDER" is extremely intriguing, so much so it was very hard to put down; I could rarely put It down at all in fact, and readers, you'll adore the characters! Each one is loving (well almost), strong and generous; and the plot just keeps churning out EXCITING events, often unanticipated! VERY well researched, this historical piece illustrates much of the true tragedy of such a war with brother fighting brother, and seeing driving circumstances dictate a man's changing his own life values, and décime the polar opposite of what they themselves never before questioned.
I highly recommend "SOUND OF DISTANT THUNDER" to anyone who wants to experience first-hand thé heartache of wondering about the fate of loved ones, the agony of anticipating the battlefield and the ecstasy of reunion.

Civil War fiction that will keep you reading
By Amazon Customer
This Kindle version is a reissue of a 2008 published book that has been reworked by the author. Though not without a few problems, it is an enjoyable story told from the viewpoint of a Petersburg, VA farming family that is swept up into a war they thought would pass them by. Though they seem more than a bit naive by today's standards, I am sure that many a sheltered and isolated farm family had a rude awakening to the realities of the Civil War. The story follows the farm's men through prison camps, escapes, needless deaths and the terrible position of being totally helpless to reach and protect their family and farmstead. There are some strong female characters who find themselves carrying weights of responsibility that they never would have dreamed possible. A large tale told on a family scale that will touch your heart. I received a complimentary copy of this book in order to review it.
