The Tell Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe is a short story to be read by all in a lifetime. This horror classic starts off in the first person narrative of a crazed psycho who assures the reader he is not mad. As he begins the detailed tail of his murder, the reader, becomes certain of the man's deranged mental state. Having a dilemma with the elderly man he works for, he decides that he must destroy his employer and his evil eye. After he suffocates him, the lunatic takes the old man's body, cuts it into pieces and buries him under the floor. When the police arrive the killer's confidence begins to fade as his "acute sense of hearing" notices heartbeats. Rapidly going insane, he believes that the police are mocking him and finally confesses to the crime. This story is a true thriller. Hearing comments from my peers about the story at a camp fire, I just had to check it out myself. The only limitation that I would give on a recommendation is for children under 13. Because of the graphic descriptions and the nature of the story it can be a little scary for the youth.

Poe's finest forte in the story is his development of characters as well as his detailed imagery. With a few words he can paint a perfect picture of the scene and of the characters. "--Nervous --very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why will you say that I am mad? The disease had sharpened my senses --not destroyed --not dulled them. Above all was the sense of hearing acute." In this first creative line of the story, Poe starts of by having the character deny insanity. By doing this the reader right away suspects that he is. Poe's characterization method is original and admirable to other authors. His morbid imagery is also legendary as he writes to describe the stalking of the old man, "..because Death, in approaching him had stalked with his black shadow before him, and enveloped the victim. And it was the mournful influence of the unperceived shadow that caused him to feel --although he neither saw nor heard --to feel the presence of my head within the room." The suspenseful story line is a landmark in literature as Poe's flawless writings carry on through generations.

Edgar Allan Poe's writings have become my favorite. His style, descriptions, and methods of creating a fiction are one of a kind. His literature is entertaining and I would recommend it to all with a high tolerance for "blood and gut" stories.

I love Edgar Allan Poe. his poems are good, but his short stories are great. It's only 8 pages long, so a short stories complete set would probably be a better choice, but I think it was money well spent...

About the Author
Internationally recognized as a Bible scholar and spiritual patriarch, Derek Prince (1915–2003) was educated as a scholar of classical languages at Eton College and Cambridge University in England, and later at Hebrew University in Israel. While serving with the British army in World War II, he began to study the Bible as a philosophical work and, as a result, experienced a life–changing encounter with Jesus Christ. Derek Prince taught and ministered on six continents for more than sixty years, imparting God's revealed truth, praying for the sick and afflicted, and sharing his prophetic insights into world events in the light of Scripture. He wrote over fifty books, which have been translated in over sixty languages and distributed worldwide. quick read, awesome

The shortest explanation of fasting I've ever read. REALLY good examples from scripture. I highly recommend.

If you are looking for something shorter and references to lots of scripture on fasting, Derek Prince's book is the way to go! You could easily read this booklet in an hour.

(If you want a really meaty discussion with lots of personal examples, check out Mahesh Chavda's book "The Hidden Power of Prayer and Fasting" If you are seeking to draw closer to Christ's heart, I highly recommend reading Bob Sorge's "Secrets of the Secret Place")

Fasting is incredible. I am so shocked at how often fasting is discussed in scripture. It is like adding a thermonuclear warhead to your prayers. It humbles you and draws you closer to Christ's heart!

Derek shows that God requires that we HUMBLE ourselves before Him; God also makes it clear that He gives grace or blessings (unmerited favor) to the HUMBLE. Can you use a blessing from the Lord?

If you wanted to cultivate true humility but did not know how, this is the book for you. Succinct, Scripture-based, practical and powerful, this book is fast-paced and very brief. It has given me the clearest and most convincing reason to fast.

I own most of the Delphi classics. I live in a remote are where such works are unobtainable. These editions are very high quality and if you are a classicist, this is the edition you will want. It contains excellent and complete translations, the original texts and some very good introductory materials. It is impossible to go wrong with these editions.

Having the English and the original Latin texts to read and compare is a real delight. It helps to review one's Latin, and also gives one a taste of an authentic flavor of our culture's ancient origins.

How Caesar would have done it?

Having it all electronically in one place is quite handy for me though I have also used other e-book versions for some of this. It is not set up as dual-language like the Loebs, but works pretty well. I could see using it as a text for my Latin students--think of the time they'd save not looking up mistranslations on the internet!

Well written account of Buchenwald

Translated from the German, Medical Block, Buchenwald is a well written account by Walter Poller, a German polical prisoner incarcerated in Buchenwald. Very informative about the prison politics in the camp as well as acurate descriptions of the nazi atrocities carried out in Buchenwald. Mr Poller explains how luck and the help of other inmates were invaluable to his survival. Highly recommended reading.

Witty and funny, this novel is quite memorable.

This novel was written, and takes place in, 19th Century England. 'The Egoist' is Sir Patterne, a well to do gent in search of a wife. After being jilted once, he pursues Miss Clara Middleton. The majority of the novel takes a look at their engagement, and her doubts about it. There is a wealth of clever dialog to be found in this novel, much of which stays with the reader (or at least this one) well after the last page is turned. Most of the comedy comes from Meredith's exposing of the Egoist (of which there is more than one in this novel).
Miss Middleton actually has the attention of a few men, and this adds to both the drama and comedy of the novel. A sample of the witty dialog should be provided so you may decide whether to get this book. A friend of Clara's gets wind of her doubts. He can't come right out and let her know, but he hints at it. He starts off by informing her that he 'has written half an essay on honeymoons'. She responds by asking 'whether that is the same as a half written essay'. He tells her 'that it is, except that my essay is completely told, but just from one side.' 'And which side is that' she asks. 'The grooms' he replies.
So I would suggest that you give this novel a try, especially if you like 19th century writers.

One of the finest novels of the Victorian century

Meredith's masterpiece is woefully underread, and it is a sad truth that the Norton scholarly edition is the only edition of THE EGOIST now in print. This is not an easy read, however: Meredith's caustic dialogue foreshadows henry James's in its mastery of ambiguities, and his witty paradoxes surpass even Oscar Wilde (who admitted his debt to Meredith). The plot is a simple one: the wealthy handsome and titled Sir Willoughby Patterne, having been jilted by one fiancée, proposes to another young woman, the intelligent and intensely likeable Clara Middleton, who accepts him; before very long, Clara has realized what a monstrous egoist Sir Willoughby is, but not after it seems too late for her to go back on her word. This is one of the most brilliant studies of mortification ever accomplished, and what makes it all the more amazing is that Meredith clearly modelled Sir Willoughby in part on himself and the extraordinarily sympathetic Clara on his wife, Mary Ellen Peacock, who deserted Meredith for another man. This book is funny, thought-provoking, and exceptionally poignant: there are moments when you read it that your heart will go into your stomach as you sympathize with Clara's appalling plight.
