Frustrating Book

Some of the gloves were beautiful (the ones with close up shots. Refer to #2 to see my frustration). However, I don't foresee myself using this book in the future because of two problems.

#1 - There is no pop up table of contents. If I need to go somewhere else in the book, I have to go back to the beginning and page over to the table of contents in the front of the book. And there are a lot of pages between the front of the book and the table of contents.

#2 - The pictures. I had two problems with the pictures. The first one was that you couldn't see some of the gloves very well. It looked like some of the pictures were taken focusing on the kids who happened to be wearing the gloves instead of the gloves. I couldn't tell if I liked the gloves on those pictures (but the pictures of the kids were beautiful). The second problem I had with the pictures is that there were no pictures in the adult section. If you wanted to take a look at the gloves, you had to go to the pictures in the kids section to see if you like them (the author made kids and adult versions of the same gloves, which I thought was very cool). So taking into account that there was no pop up table of contents, if you wanted to see the pictures you would have to go back to the beginning, page over a lot of pages to get to the table of contents to get to the kids version of the gloves. And then if you liked the kids version of the gloves and wanted to make the adult version, you would have to go back to the beginning, page over to the table of contents, and go back to the adult pattern. Of course, there's always the possibility that after seeing the gloves, you don't want to make them. So the process needs to be repeated to find a pair you like. Also if you are in the middle of an adult glove and want to see the picture, you would have to repeat the above process just for a glimpse at the picture. Too much work in my opinion.

Like I said, I don't foresee myself using this book because of these two problems. However, as stated above, the pictures that showed close up shots of the gloves showed that the gloves were beautiful. So this author shows a lot of promise. However, I think $9.99 is too much to pay for a book with these problems.

Cute for different ages

This was a cute little book that had lots patterns for different sizes.
It gave me new projects to make, and with the basic patterns you can alter there is even more to think about designing on my own. No fluff and frills language to fill the book, just easy to follow and apply instructions.

Patrice Wilton knew from the age of twelve that she wanted to write books that would take the reader to faraway places. As a voracious reader, she gobbled up books, and her imagination soared. She was born in Vancouver, Canada, and had a great need to see the world that she had read about.

Patrice became a flight attendant for seventeen years and traveled the world. At the age of forty she sat down to write her first book—in longhand! Her interests include tennis, golf, and writing stories for women of all ages.

She is the proud mother of two, has three lovely grand-daughters, and a wonderful man at her side. They live in West Palm Beach, Florida, where he teaches her golf, and she teaches him patience.

Had potential...

I'm sorry, but I can't recommend this book. It had potential and the sample chapters interested me enough to buy the book, but in the end I wanted to return it. And no, my low rating has nothing to do with grammar and punctuation...lol

I think the story line had amazing potential, but the way it played out just didn't work for me. Below is what frustrated me the most:
*** MAJOR spoiler alert ***

We learn that Kari (the heroine)was completely in love with the hero, Jake, when they were younger. They were a couple and he went off to college and she stayed home for reasons explained in the book. It's not clear if they were in a long distance relationship or if they broke up. She found out she was pregnant with his child and went to see him at college. She sees him with another girl and leaves, without confronting him. On the way home, she gets in an accident because she is so distraught and she loses the baby. She never talks to him again until 15 years later and he's moving in to the same apartment building.

Ok, so the author makes me feel for Kari and she explains how catching Jake with another girl and losing the baby changed her and the course of her life. This was a MAJOR event. I wanted to scream with how the story played out when Jake finds out the reason Kari hates/hated him so much. OMG! It pisses me off when the big moments come and then they are sloughed off, like it was no big deal.

1. It's not clear if they broke up when he went to college or if they had a long distance relationship. He asks her why she stopped answering his calls. She tells him that she came down to visit him and saw him with another girl. She said it hurt to know that he was able to get over her so quickly, when she was still in love with him. He tells her "You're wrong. I don't remember the girl. I loved you, Kari. I wanted us to be together." But, then later he thinks to himself how there had been a few girls, but they obviously didn't mean anything to him because he doesn't remember their names. If only Kari had called him ahead of time, then it all could have been avoided. Excuse me?! Our so called hero is letting us know if only he knew ahead of time she was coming, he could have made sure she never found out about it? His excuse is that he was just a kid.

2. Then later in the book, she tells him that she had been pregnant with his baby and lost it in an accident because she had been crying so hard when she caught him with the other girl. And then he thinks to himself "If she'd called and told him she was coming that weekend and not run off, the baby would still be alive, and he'd have dropped out of college and married her." That's great, you would marry her because of the baby, and not because of her.

Not enough time was given to these moments in the books and I don't think Jake realized how much he truly affected Kari. Jake should have shown more remorse and the author should have given more than two pages to these moments.

Unfortunately, it wasn't only the above that bothered me. I wasn't interested in the other characters in the story and felt like the story didn't really flow. It felt choppy.

A Hero Lies Within- Fantastic

Wow....what a fantantastic start to a new serial romance. This has started out great.

The reader is drawn in from page 1. The author Patrice Wilton has a natural gift in writing. You are immediately drawn to the characters. The characters are witty and full of personality. You feel like they are people that you really know. The dialogue is great....just the right amount of snark. And of course there is the intrigue of romantic conflict....lost love...the one that got away. This could of been just an ordinary book but the author has a true gift in story telling that goes above and beyond. Oh and I must mention....her story takes place in the Palm Beach area. I am from the area and the author is right on the mark with places and scenery.

I would highly recommend this serial. I can't wait for the next installment. Two weeks is just too long! Buy this book!

Patrice Wilton knows her heroes. This is from what I understand, part of the first of a terrific series. I don't know if I can wait to read the rest of it!! Returning veterans face a gambit of issues when they return and this hits home for me... I'm glad there will be more of these hero stories!

A HOME RUN

Usually when you read a book of short stories the quality is inconsistent: some are fantastic, others are unimportant. No so with this book.
But this isn't quite a book of short stories. Instead, an editor has chosen entire chapters from books written by other authors, some I've heard of, others I haven't. Every chapter had a purpose.
Don't expect to be uplifted by each chapter; after all, there could be no empty tomb had there first not been a crucifixion. The crucifixion was necessary. Many Christians gave their lives for their faith not long after, and in the Middle East, Christians are still giving their lives today.
But each chapter has a purpose, a lesson. Some will uplift your spirit; others will remind you of sacrifice. All are well written.
You will recognize some of the authors: Desmond Tutu and C. S. Lewis who is more famous for his children's books ( although he wrote a wonderful book about grief ); others may become your new favorites.
Just give it a chance. I'm glad I did.

Since this book is composed of chapters from 10 different books, I would not expect to like all of them equally. It does give a range of views on various topics and some insight into the ten books should the reader wish to purchase any of them.

Harsh advocates rethinking the Maryland campaign and promotes the argument that Antietam was one of the most interesting, critical, and potentially enlightening episodes in U.S. history.

Antietam Revisited

My kepi is off to Mr.Harsh. His latest work, dare I say, takes the place of Murfin's "The Gleam of Bayonets" The detail of troop movement is quite precise, and is followed up by sound research!
It's as if Harsh rode aside Lee as he spoke at length of his strategy, movements, and inner most thoughts, then Harsh carefully jotted them down and sent them off to the presses. The book is quite captivating, and pleasently lacks the usual focus on trivial matter. This book is truly the meat and potatoes of the "Maryland Campaign"

Terrific Challenge To Conventional Wisdom!

This book takes a totally fresh look at the 1862 Maryland Campaign and the Confederate strategy. This is by far the best book I've read on the campaign, and there have been some good ones in the past 40 years (Murphin's Gleam of Bayonets and Sears' Landscape Turned Red, for example). The book is fascinating because the author exposes numerous myths about the campaign. I was impressed with the rigor and objectivity of his investigation and analysis. What I especially liked was his philosophy toward history set forth in the introduction, wherein he explains the dangers of relying too heavily on 20/20 hindsight. I was impressed that the author showed great fairness to General McClellan--judging his actions based solely on what he knew at the time, and what he had been ordered to accomplish. McClellan was far from perfect, but the relentless trashing he has taken from historians has alway struck me as excessive. The author, among other interesting assessments, points out that the Army of Northern Virginia was much larger than what we've always been told-- 75,500 troops rather than the 40,000-55,000 number that we've often heard. I highly recommend this book - the story is terrific and the footnotes alone are worth the price!
