Enjoyable read

Read this book awhile ago and still remember the beginning when a murder is about to be committed on a carriage which has an accident. Our hero Sebastian Cavendish is thrown from the coach before it crashes. He lands in a ditch in a thunderstorm. Our heroine Amelia who Iives alone finds Sebastian and takes care of him. The mysteries are who and why would anyone want Sebastian dead and what is behind Amelia's living frugally and so out of town. Highly recommended.

Basic - hoping for more

I was really looking forward to the rescuee/rescuer dynamic, but I felt like the plot moved things along too quickly in order to get to the action/suspense. Plot tried to fit too many themes/ideas into a one framework. Many of the characters actions seemed too convenient, too contrived - particularly Sebastian and Amelia.

Spoiler.. Not my favorite romance

Don't be fooled by the title; Cinders and Ashes is not a straightforward retelling of Cinderella. The heroine is hardly the Cinderella type.
Amelia is a house keeper to an old man but lives in her own cottage. She discovers an injured man on her way home and somehow manages to get him back to her cottage. She plans on nursing him back to health but cannot help but admire his manly physique and handsome face.
Sebastian is a peer and when he awakens he discovers a beautiful woman caring for him. He is attracted to her but is worried on her behalf as he knows that his kidnappers (who he escaped) will be on the hunt for him and that puts Amelia squarely in the middle of danger.
Amelia has some secrets and she wants to keep them well hidden and despite the fact that she has engaged in a physical romance with Sebastian, she does not want to leave her home for the relative safety of Sebastian's estate.
Amelia is stubborn and really impulsive. She can also hold a grudge. I liked her in the beginning of the story but by the end I was not fond of this character. She is demanding and she hates listening to anyone's opinion but her own.
SPOILER.. She is supposedly destitute yet she does not put a lot of thought into the dangers of having a relationship that could end in an unwanted pregnancy. And she becomes a little too adventurous in bed for a girl who is rather sheltered. I could hardly believe her actions.
Sebastian talks right past Amelia. It's like he is not listening at all to her requests. He's like the modern man watching a football game and only half listening to someone as the running back is going in for a touchdown except there is no game or horse race or anything else commanding his attention so I wondered why he did not respond appropriately.
The ending was predictable and I found myself not really that interested in either the mystery or this couple.
