“Get it Forward Early!”

In another era this could be construed as the long ball game, which many-a-coach got vilified for. Now in a different decade it could be counter-attacking football, a tactic heavily utilized by several coaches, perhaps most notably in todays game, Jose Mourinho. In different circumstances it might also be considered as direct play - marginally less offensive these days than the long ball game of the 1970’s, but nonetheless a similar strategy.

What is Counter-attacking play?

Counter- attacking soccer is essentially paired with a defensive strategy, which may well be to defend from the middle or even defending thirds. The aim being to drop a bit deeper and take advantage of the opposition’s vulnerability and out-of -balance defensive shape when attacking, and then catch them on the “break” once possession is won.
Offensive teams in possession may well be deemed vulnerable because attacking play often requires players to be spread out in high and wide positions of the field. Consequently, if the move breaks down because possession is lost, players maybe out of position to deal with the immediate quick break of the opposition. The square ball, or mis-directed switch of play is often the culprit!
The important factor in the counter attack here is the speed play. And that may well mean a long, through ball played behind the defense of the team that lost possession. Indeed a top, former EPL coach used to employ the tactic of encouraging the opposition full back(s) to break out of defense in possession or to join in an attack. He would then have his striker occupy that position and instruct the team to play a long or through pass into that area as soon as possession was won back.
The main characteristics of effective counter-attacking play are essentially: -
The speed of play - which means quick, incisive, individual or combination play, in the shortest time possible. One or maximum two-touch play is often the most effective.
Forward passing - For obvious reasons the probability of scoring decreases with delayed, square or backward passing, as the opposition get more time to re-organize their defensive shape.Forward passing is preferred as it can take remaining opposition defenders out of the game.
Speed, strength and mobility of players - when the strategy is to defend either from the midfield or defensive third, launching a counter attack could mean numerous players having to make long, fast breaks before the opposition have a chance to organize. It could also possibly be an individual having the power and pace to outrun the opposition defense on a break.

Can goalkeepers feature in counter attacks?

Absolutely YES! For most set pieces against (corners or free kicks delivered into the box) the opposition will send their big guns forward, which invariably means one maybe even both central defenders being in attacking areas. That means by having a strategically positioned forward(s) upfield and alert to the tactic, a goalkeeper if able to claim the cross, maybe able to launch an immediate long kick beyond the remaining defender(s) for the furthermost forward(s) to run onto.
Indeed, even in open play, if the goalkeeper is able to claim from a cross or through ball, good distribution, either thrown or kicked, to immediately alert teammates could start an effective counter attack.
Many clubs are now using goalkeepers in outfield practices, enabling them to be more effective to either keep possession or be the launching pad for attacking play.

How does it differ from direct play?

Whether purists agree with it or not, direct play is a legitimate tactic and still used by many well known coaches today. As opposed to quick and slick passing involved in counter-attacking, often direct play will feature a more speculative long pass played into an area behind the opposition defense. Typically teams using this ploy will have a quick, powerful forward who is able to exploit the tactic and either out run or out mu
