The alpha and his omega

A lot of urban fantasy makes a big deal about alpha werewolves, often on the assumption that "alpha" means big, strong and sexy among wolves.

But Patricia Briggs explores the opposite end of the spectrum in the novella "Alpha and Omega," which also serves as a springboard for her new series (a sort of spinoff in the same universe as the Mercy Thompson series). It's a tightly written, open-ended little story about an abused Omega werewolf and the unexpected love between her and a very powerful alpha.

When a boy is kidnapped by her abusive pack, a terrified Anna finally dares to call the Marrok, the leader of all werewolves. He ends up sending his son Charles Cornick to deal with the troublemakers, and Charles is shocked when he realizes that Anna isn't a super-submissive wolf -- she's a rare Omega wolf, and the disgusting Leo and savage Justin have been abusing and molesting her all over the place.

And now Charles is determined to change all that, especially by showing Anna the way a werewolf's life is REALLY supposed to be, about her status as an Omega, and the connection between them. But there are some truly nasty secrets at the heart of the Chicago pack and the strange absence of female werewolves -- and now that Anna knows who she is, she isn't going to take it lying down.

"Alpha and Omega" is set in the same world as several of Patricia Briggs' other urban fantasy stories (most notably the ongoing Mercy Thompson series) -- for example, the ancient werewolf lord known as the Marrok seems to hang over this novella like a thundercloud. But the opening novella of the Alpha and Omega series works quite nicely as a story on its own, with new characters and problems.

Briggs brings a lush, atmospheric feel to this particular story ("Though he smelled of anger, he also smelled like spring rain, wolf, and man"), as well as some unexpected plot twists and an ending that paves the way for future stories about Anna and Charles. And she does a good job dealing with the concept of "omega wolves" -- sort of a lupine "class clown" of very low rank -- and their importance to werewolves.

Personally I'm sick and tired of "forced" relationships wherein magical forces MAKE the characters have a relationship. It's usually a sign of a writer's laziness in writing about love, or worse. But Briggs actually pulls it off -- despite the mystical wolf-mating between Charles and Anna's lupine sides, their budding relationship is a genuinely touching one, full of protectiveness, respect and growing trust.

"Alpha and Omega" was a solid start to a new urban fantasy series, and it leaves you wanting to know what will happen next for Charles and Anna. A pleasant little read, but have "Cry Wolf" close at hand.

"Alpha & Omega" is a short story by Patricia Briggs set in the world of her Mercy Thompson series. While it is certainly not necessary to read Briggs' Mercy series, "Alpha & Omega" will be richer if you do. The two main characters are Charles Cornick (Samuel's brother & Bran's son) & a new werewolf, Anna Latham. Charles instantly recognizes Anna as his mate & an Omega wolf. The Omega wolf was a new concept to me & is a wolf who is outside of the pack structure & provides a calming influence to, among other things, wolves who have trouble with the change.

"Alpha & Omega" mainly serves to set up Briggs' new series involving Anna & Charles, but it is a great little story in its own right. I have read "Cry Wolf," the first book in the Anna & Charles series, & I definitely think that you should read "Alpha & Omega" first.

Wonderful Story and Couple + Rebuttal to the 1 star ratings

First I have to state I am very disappointed with the people who have given this one star. When you read their comments 2 are angry about "price" and the other is mad about the lack of preview text -- Neither of these issues have to do with reviewing the story and its content. If you don't like the price of this edition (a signed limited issue collectors hardback) get the paper back anthology that has the story in it (on the prowl). And as for not having a preview of the story, vent to amazon - do not disrespect this wonderful story and fantastic author for it. Now on to my review!

I will not give a summary as that has been done earlier and the book caption is very well done. That being said this is one of my ALL TIME favorite stories. I for one was so very glad this hardback edition became available because I ruined 2 paperback editions reading and RE-reading this magical tale!

Anna and Charles are one of the most wonderful couples ever written. Their tale is told in such an honest and REAL way that I felt not only like they were real but like I had met them and traveled the books journey with them. For a short story it has more emotional punch than most novels I have read and sets the stage for a fantastic continuation in subsequent books. I have since read the two follow up books ( cry wolf and hunting ground) and have not been at all disappointed.

Anna proves that a woman can be strong and still feminine; can be beaten but not broken. With an internal strength that rivals Joan of Arc she traverses internal and external trials like a champion warrior.

Charles shows that physical strength (and the alpha male) can also be gentle, caring and emotionally stable. He also shows how strong it can be to have faith in someone else and to trust in the one you love.

I can not recommend this story enough...read it for yourself! If I could give 6 out of 5 stars I would!

Biografía del autor

Ivan Doig nació en 1939 en White Sulphur Springs (Montana), en el seno de una familia de colonos y rancheros de origen escocés. Tras la prematura muerte de su madre fue criado por su padre y su abuela en diferentes ranchos del estado, pero sin abandonar nunca Montana, fuente constante de inspiración para la mayoría de sus novelas y ensayos. Doig, graduado en Periodismo y en Historia, ejerció como granjero y trabajó en el Servicio Forestal antes de convertirse en editor y colaborador habitual de periódicos y revistas. En 1979 apareció su primera obra, This House of Sky: Landscapes of a Western Mind, un texto autobiográfico inspirado en sus años de juventud, que llegaría a ser finalista del National Book Award, y al que seguiría una larga lista de obras, narrativas y de no ficción, inspiradas en su mayoría en la vida rural de Montana y en sus imponentes paisajes.

Entre su producción destacan las tres novelas que componen la Trilogía McCaskill (English Creek, Dancing at the Rascal Fair y Ride with me, Mariah Montana), un complejo ciclo novelesco que abarca cien años en la historia del estado de Montana; Bucking the Sun (1996); Mountain Time (1999) y Una temporada para silbar (2006; Libros del Asteroide, 2011). Meh. Just, meh.

I was hoping for more from this one, but after viewing a number of the recipes, I have to say that there's little chance that I'll cook ANY Asian dish using (*erp!*) CANNED MIXED VEGETABLES. Yes, you read that correctly. Like, Veg-All. Ugh. Not gonna happen. Wasn't terribly impressed. If you're looking for a good one, check out Delicious Dim Sum: A Collection of Simple Chinese Dim Sum Recipes, or Asian Cooking, both also available for Kindle.

So the CDC has suggested that we eat 10 servings of fruits and vegetables a day and, since I am planning on living forever, I have decided to, for 2013, try to do just that. I sort of tried to do this in 2012 but on most days only got about seven daily servings into my diet. This year I decided that big salads were the answer and this is where this book has been wonderful.

This is one of several books that I have to help me accomplish my 10 vegetables/fruits a day goal. The book is organized well and the recipes are clear. My one gripe is that the recipes do not have calorie counts (I use my Weight Watchers online tabulator to figure that out) but almost all of them only contain health y, wholesome, good for you ingredients. I have given it five stars despite the calorie issue because the recipes are that good!

Probably the best thing about this book, as opposed to other salad books that I have is that most of the dressing ingredients only contain "good" fats. For those of you who have not spent too many nights, as I have, pouring over the good versus bad fat literature, the "good" fats are basically those that come from olive oil, grape seed oil, avocado and nuts. From the Inside Flap
Shepherds' Salad
Serves 6
Ingredients:
5-6 tomatoes, diced
2 cucumbers, sliced
5-6 white mushrooms, sliced
2 red bell peppers, sliced
7 oz ham, diced
1 onion, chopped
4 eggs, boiled and sliced
7 oz feta cheese, grated
½ bunch parsley, finely cut
4 tbsp olive oil
1 tbsp vinegar
1 tsp salt
20-30 black olives
Cut the tomatoes in small cubes. Cut the cucumber and the peppers in rings, chop the onion, thinly slice the mushrooms. Cut the ham. Combine the prepared ingredients in a salad bowl, drizzle with the olive oil and vinegar, add the salt, then mix well. Split the salad in 6 plates and sprinkle with the grated feta cheese and finely chopped parsley. Boil the eggs for 10 min, then cut them in discs. Garnish the salads with egg slices and olives. Serve chilled.

Delicious, Healthy and Worth the Money

So the CDC has suggested that we eat 10 servings of fruits and vegetables a day and, since I am planning on living forever, I have decided to, for 2013, try to do just that. I sort of tried to do this in 2012 but on most days only got about seven daily servings into my diet. This year I decided that big salads were the answer and this is where this book has been wonderful.

This is one of several books that I have to help me accomplish my 10 vegetables/fruits a day goal. The book is organized well and the recipes are clear. My one gripe is that the recipes do not have calorie counts (I use my Weight Watchers online tabulator to figure that out) but almost all of them only contain health y, wholesome, good for you ingredients. I have given it five stars despite the calorie issue because the recipes are that good!

Probably the best thing about this book, as opposed to other salad books that I have is that most of the dressing ingredients only contain "good" fats. For those of you who have not spent too many nights, as I have, pouring over the good versus bad fat literature, the "good" fats are basically those that come from olive oil, grape seed oil, avocado and nuts. Finally! A healthy recipe book written by someone who actually knows about health. Every ingredient in these salads is fresh, nothing from a can! Warm quinoa salad, yum! Each recipe is simple and includes just a few fresh ingredients, so they are all easy to make. This book includes several dozen fresh recipes. No fluff here, just healthy, fresh, delicious recipes. Can't wait to try the green pea and chicken salad.

Can Christine ever forget her beloved North?

Book 6 in Canadian West features the life of Christine. She is recovering from a near tragic relationship with Boyd from book 5, and World War II looms bigger and bigger. Between jobs as the book opens, Christine attends the wedding of her big brother and meets another Mountie, Laray. Is it love? Unable to decided, Christine leaves and cares for her injured Aunt Mary. She discovers a worthwhile ministry at the local Hope Canteen, sharing Christ with young servicemen and women. An automobile accident proves pivotal for both the story line and Christine's life. Oke introduces a handsome young resident at the hospital whose family helped found the town. Christine is torn about her future which seems to revolve around her beloved North. Oke has a very surprising ending to this book, one I was not prepared for nor particularly liked. Hope this book is not the end of the series.

Stick with the orginal four.

I was excited to see that Janette Oke had written two more books for her Canadian West series (my favorite of all her books)about the Delaney's kids. Either the quality of her writing has diminished or my literary taste has matured; either way, these two books were not that great. The sixth one was especially aggravating! The character development was poor; the plot was choppy. It was as if the author was trying to minimize words, frequently giving summaries of what had just occurred, rather than allowing you to enjoy it yourself. Without spoiling, the romance aspect of this book completely failed, and was completely unbelievable. Stick with the original four and skip the latter two.

Compared to her best this doesn't measure up

I wanted to like this story, but it felt rushed and disjointed. She builds up a romantic story line and then skips over into another story entirely. I must admit I like the stories about settlers better than the more modern settings and situations. I suppose the wars aren't that modern but they're a less innocent time. I felt like she had cheated her readers by rushing this to press before taking the time to edit it properly. She had proved herself in the past and I'll buy her books again but it was really disapointing. A writer who can write Roses For Mama can do a lot better.

Tanika L. Lynch was born on July 8, 1978 on the East side of Detroit, Michigan to her 15-year-old mother, Gyra, and her much older father, Lloyd, who left before she was born. Tanika is the eldest of three siblings, and also the black sheep of the family. After being inflicted with severe abuse, abandonment, betrayal and rejection from the hands of loved ones, she was forced out onto the streets at the age of 12 to make a new home. In order to survive, she was introduced to the dope game. It wasn’t long before Tanika was caught up in the street life, and all the drama that came along with it. This life eventually landed her in prison on murder charges at the age of 16, and pregnant. The penitentiary became her turning point. Within two months of incarceration, Tanika received her G.E.D., attended college full time with hopes of receiving a degree in psychology, received vocational certificates in Culinary arts and Building trades and pursued her life long dreams of becoming an author, after endless encouragement from a prison guard. Today, Tanika is a 27-year-old reformed woman whose main goal is to reach the hearts of others through her writing. Tanika has plans to devote her life to helping misunderstood youths upon her release. She feels as though she had been there, done all that. Tanika is a divine example of God’s mercy and grace!

It's a miserable life....but an outstanding read!!!!!!!

Tanika Lynch deserves a standing ovation for this captivating tale of misery that engulfs you and pulls you through the wringer with the central character, a young abused teenager named Kamone. Kamone has suffered just about any type of abuse you can imagine but holds true to her lifelong love for her siblings to fight until the very end to assure their well being and safety. She will pull at your heartstings making it skip a few beats, you will become breathless, matter of fact, you will have to put the book down a couple of times to get yourself together. That's just how good this book is!

Tanika's story seems like one of the bunch, but, I assure you the journey she takes you on will be one of the most memorable ones that you will ever have the privilege of traveling.

Tanika Lynch most definitely deserves 10 stars for this wonderful literary piece of art! I applaud you Ms. Lynch and will mos def be in line for your future endeavors!!!!!!! Your light is shining! Many blessings to you and yours!

I READ THIS BOOK IN ONE DAY NOT BECAUSE IT WAS SHORT BUT BECAUSE I HAD TO KNOW WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT. YOU WILL CRY,LAUGH AND FIGHT TO SURVIVE WITH KAMONE AS SHE STRUGGLES TO TAKE CARE OF HER SELF AND HER SISTER AND BROTHER.

KAMONE NEVER HAD A CHILD HOOD SHE WENT FROM PLAYING WITH DOLLS TO BEING TREATED LIKE A STREET DOLL FOR ALL TO PLAY WITH.

I know when I like a book when I finish it in two days! This book was VERY brutal, VERY graphic, very SEXUAL, and VERY hard! Kamone just had it bad at birth, poor girl! A definate check out.

The result was a wave of Jewish settlements marked by a high degree of openness, mobility, and interaction with both Christians and Muslims. Ray's view challenges the traditional historiography, which holds that Sephardic communities, already fully developed, were simply reestablished on the frontier. In the early years of settlement, Iberia's crusader kings actively supported Jewish economic and political activity, and Jewish interaction with their Christian neighbors was extensive.

Only as the frontier was firmly incorporated into the political life of the peninsular states did these frontier Sephardic populations begin to forge the communal structures that resembled the older Jewish communities of the North and the interior. By the end of the thirteenth century, royal intervention had begun to restrict the amount of contact between Jewish and Christian communities, signaling the end of the open society that had marked the frontier for most of the century.

The Jews in medieval Spain created a rich and varied culture, and it was there that the kabbalah saw its first flowering in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Ray examines the early development of Jewish communities in the various peninsular kingdoms during the transition from Muslim to Christian rule. He contends that the social, political, and economic factors of the frontier during the second half of the thirteenth century helped to create Jewish communities characterized by a high degree of fluidity. This study is divided into two parts. The first focuses on the process of Jewish immigration and settlement, and it examines Jewish landownership and the nature and diversity of economic opportunities that drew Jews to the frontier. The second traces the forces that led to the gradual constriction of Jewish society in southern Iberia and the degree to which Jewish settlers were able to endure despite the eventual "closing" of this Hispano-Jewish frontier.
