During his escape, he comes across a dilapidated tower and finds a book of magic and starts his own self-tutelage. Learning he has a talent for magic, he makes his way to the capital to see if he can make his own path while holding on to his freedom along the way.

About the Author
D.W. Jackson was born in McAlester, Oklahoma. After graduating from high school he attended OCU a private college. In 03 fresh out of basic training and in his second semester he was deployed to Iraq. He started working as soon as returning home until health issues in 2012 forced him into a very early retirement. With time on his hands he decided to pursue his lifelong dream of being a published author.

Great story, badly edited

I wasn't going to write a review on this book due to the fact that it's pretty well covered in the other reviews but it deserves better than two stars in my opinion. The editing is bad, I had to grit my teeth a couple times. If you can get past that though it's a really fun read. It's a good story that leaves a lot of room for growth. I'm looking forward to seeing where the story goes and will buy the sequel. I only hope that the author has someone read through his story to make corrections before posting it.

Potentially good story let down by writing

The plot of Inexperienced Mage could have been fairly interesting were it not for the atrocious editing. Grammar, punctuation, spelling, run on sentences, missing words, repetitive word usage(just about every single female in the book was described as cute at one point or another), take your pick this book had them all. The editing issues extend beyond simple technical flaws. This author really needed to spend some more time working on basic descriptions and learn ways to convey information to the reader outside of narrating the main character's thoughts. Large sections of the book are information dumps, and read almost like an outline of a full novel. The reader is constantly told about events rather than being shown. We never see the protagonist struggle with anything. Rather than fleshing out potentially interesting scenes where he is learning about magic or crafting something, we are given one sentence describing the problem followed by one sentence stating that after several hours of work he figured it out. I am not exaggerating when I say that formula was followed for every single scene where the protagonist overcomes an obstacle. I did finish the book, hence the 2 stars, but I will not be purchasing the sequel.

Good story, poor editing

The story was decent, but several factors made the experience less than satisfactory. The editing was just plain bad. There were at least 2 instances where I read identical paragraphs one after the other. There are countless missing words, and the spelling errors are just as bad. These really threw me out of the rhythm of the story.
