About the Author
Maurice Druon was a French resistance hero, a Knight of the British Empire and a holder of the Grand Croix de la Legion d'Honneur. He was also a member of the Academie francaise and a celebrated novelist, best known for his series of seven historical novels under the title of The Accursed Kings, which were twice adapted for television. A passionate Anglophile, he was a great expert on all things English, including its medieval history, which provides great inspiration for the series. His many and diverse fans include George RR Martin, Nicolas Sarkozy and Vladimir Putin.

A French "Game of Thrones"

This is one of a series of books dealing with the last French kings in the Capetian dynasty. This volume is focussed on Phillip IV (the Fair) while subsequent volumes will deal with the reigns of his offspring. While the book is fiction, it sticks rather closely to events in France. The focus is on two major events in Phillip's reign, the destruction and expropriation of the of the Knights Templar and the scandal of Phillips' daughters' extramarital affairs which landed both in prison and threatened to end the dynasty. Within all this there is intertwined the beginnings of a love story between the son of an Italian merchant and the daughter of a minor member of the Flemish gentry. The book reads easily and there is a glossary in the beginning to help sort out the main characters.

A great, interesting, move-along story. Compelling backgrounds of where you are in time and place. These make you feel you feel you are in the real time and place of the story.

a good read, and left me wanting more

I'm assuming this was translated from the French, which is why I gave it only "good" for writing. Compelling story, with a new-to-me slant on the murder of the Templars. Don't know how much of it is factual - were the 3 princesses really as portrayed here? Anyway, a good read, and left me wanting more.......
